I wonder if Turkey will exploit that to take more territory in Syria?
Yea very possible they go into the Kurdish areas. Russia was main thing holding them back. Trump administration put in a ceasefire that I believe is still in effect but US forces have left (thank goodness) Russian forces don’t want Turkish forces in Syria either though

[CNN] Canada’s airspace closed to all Russian aircraft operators

Canada’s airspace is closed to all Russian aircraft operators effective immediately, according to the Canadian Minister of Transport, Omar Alghabra.
“Effective immediately, Canada’s airspace is closed to all Russian aircraft operators. We will hold Russia accountable for its unprovoked attacks against Ukraine,” Alghabra said on Sunday morning.
Canada joins a number European countries, including Germany, Italy and France, that have announced they will close its airspace to Russian aircrafts and airlines in response to the invasion of Ukraine.

[FoxNews] Thousands of Russians arrested for protesting Putin's war on Ukraine, human rights group says
quote:
While Russia's war on Ukraine encounters more resistance than expected on the battlefield, the Russian government detained more than 3,000 domestic protesters for pushing back against it at home.
According to the human rights group OVD-Info, Russian security forces detained 3,093 people between Thursday when the anti-war protests began in its cities and early Sunday morning. Crowds in Moscow and St. Petersburg gathered in the streets last week, with some chanting "no war."
The arrests come as Russian leaders continue to be frustrated by slower-than-expected gains in their invasion of Ukraine, according to American officials.

Vietnam was pretty close, on the American side (at least as far as letting journalists go where they want). We haven't made that mistake again, nor has anybody else.

[CNN] Ukrainian forces destroy Russian column at the edge of Kyiv
quote:
CNN has geolocated video showing the destruction by Ukrainian forces of a column of Russian armored personnel carriers and other vehicles on the edge of the capital, Kyiv.
One video shot Sunday morning shows the Russian column moving at speed through a residential neighborhood (Bucha) on the western outskirts of the city.
A short time later, the Russian group is geolocated close by, but most of the vehicles are wrecked and some of them are turned on their sides. There is no sign of the Russian soldiers.
Over one video, a man is heard swearing in Ukrainian and then saying "They came to our land. I wish you all to burn in Hell."
"I would give my life if needed."
The man says the Ukrainian Air Force "did its job well," but it's unclear how the attack against the convoy was conducted.

[The Guardian] In Greece the first of two military transport planes, loaded with defence equipment, has departed from Eleusina for Ukraine.

Portable rocket launchers, ammunition and Kalashnikov rifles will be aboard the two C130’s. The shipments will be delivered via Poland.
Athens’ deputy defence minister, Nikos Hardalias, will oversee the dispatch of humanitarian assistance later in the day when two cargo carriers also head for Poland.
The aid comes amid a brewing row between Russia and Greece regarding Athens’ stance over Ukraine. Despite the two Orthodox nations having traditionally strong ties, culturally and politically, Greece has sided firmly with its fellow EU and Nato partners throughout the crisis and given US forces unfettered access to four military bases across the country.
Prime minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has denounced Moscow’s invasion as a violation of international law and called for the violence to end.
Greek fury mounted on Saturday following the deaths of ten members of the country’s large diaspora in Russian air strikes close to Mariupol - home to some 120,000 ethnic Greeks - in south east Ukraine.
On Sunday Russia’s embassy in Athens issued a statement in which it urged Greek politicians, the media and political party leaders to “come round, assume their responsibilities, stop the anti-Russian propaganda and to show level headedness, clarity and seriousness.” It berated Greek officials for failing to show any sympathy for the loss of Russian lives in Donbas and deplored the decision to decorate official buildings and fountains in Athens in Ukrainian colours.

That doesn’t really mean anything. It’s a scare tactic from Putin.
It may be a scare tactic by Putin but it definitely increases the chances of an accident happening. We narrowly avoided nuclear war many times during the Cold War due to accidents. Having nuclear systems on high alert is not a good thing.

Not to mention they’ve now reportedly agreed to talks in a non-neutral nation that was a staging ground for the invasion. Doesn’t exactly sound like they’re in a strong position.
To be fair, the original cease fire was negotiated in Minsk

[Phil Stewart - Twitter] President Vladimir Putin's order to put Russian nuclear forces on high alert is part of a pattern of Moscow manufacturing threats to justify aggression, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said on Sunday."We have the ability to defend ourselves," Psaki said

Putin’s only legitimate option is to carpet bomb Ukrainian cities to the ground. Considering the situation it’s the best terrible option that he can get away with, to send a message to the world.

[The Guardian] More on the possible meeting between Ukrainian and Russian officials from AP.
quote:
It reports that the office of Ukraine’s president has confirmed that a delegation will meet with Russian officials as Moscow’s troops draw closer to Kyiv.
The office of Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on the Telegram messaging app that the two sides would meet at an unspecified location on the Belarusian border and did not give a precise time for the meeting, the news agency reports.
The announcement came hours after Russia announced that its delegation had flown to Belarus to await talks. Ukrainian officials initially rejected the move, saying any talks should take place elsewhere than Belarus, where Russia has placed a large contingent of troops.

That would literally send Russia into a status similar to Iran, cut off from the rest of the world and a 3rd world country with a nuclear dictator.
Is Putin ready to put his people through that? I don't see how it's worth it.

Lithuanian Aid Reached Ukraine
Lithuania is in an interesting position and may be the flash point for a war between NATO and Russia. Lithuania and Poland have cut off flights to the Russian enclave at Kaliningrad (formerly Konigsberg Germany). The Russians expelled the Germans and moved their people in, and now it's the home of the Russian Baltic fleet. And it's isolated from the rest of Russia. Bold move by Lithuania to poke the Russian bear this forcefully, but they also have to know that if Ukraine falls they are the next in line. But they are also a NATO member. Hopefully we are reinforcing Lithuania rapidly.
