Yes it’s occurring in the CSTO instead of NATO. At least he/she got the TO part right. Which is more than he/she normally gets right.

Well this isn’t a good sign: Erdogan and Putin are walking arm-in-arm

Why should Russia stop them from fighting? I'm genuinely curious why it is in their interests other than avoiding refugees

They are both ostensibly Russian allies, and Russia has military bases in both countries. Russian troops and military assets would be significantly endangered by a broader war, and one of the two countries would likely end up turning against Russia, so Russia needs to mediate a quick end to the conflict.

Both are CSTO (Russia's version of NATO) members. It would be like if Slovakia and the Czech Republic started shooting at each other. Russia is supposed to be bound by treaty to mediate. Also if one or both of the dictators of those countries falls then that creates a power vacuum and instability in a muslim nation that is in the CSTO and CIS and therefore very easy to have citizens to get into Russia. I am sure that Russia is very interested in keeping its puppet dictators in power and stable in both of those countries which border Afghanistan where ISIS is making a comeback. The last thing Russia or the world in general needs is more unstable muslim nations to provide ISIS and other Islamic extremists a place to expand.

Doesn't seem like Putin is getting much out of this little tour except public humiliation.

Aww poor little (literally) sawed off KGB cocksucker getting dressed down by XI and Modi. Erdogan publicly says Crimea belongs to Ukraine...

And your army, navy and air force are garbage. And the official ATACMS era is about to begin.

ISW Update

quote:

The revelations of mass graves of civilians and torture chambers in newly liberated Izyum confirm ISW’s previous assessments that the Bucha atrocities were not isolated war crimes but rather a microcosm of Russian atrocities throughout Russian-occupied areas.

quote:

Russian President Vladimir Putin appeared to threaten increased attacks on Ukrainian civilian infrastructure if reported Ukrainian attacks on Russian military positions in Russian Federation territory continue.

quote:

The Ukrainian Resistance Center warned on September 16 that Russian forces are planning to conduct false flag attacks against civilian population in Russian-occupied Ukraine and urged Ukrainians in occupied areas to avoid public places between September 17 and September 20

quote:

Correction: ISW's 9/15/2022 update contained several errors. We mistakenly located the Kinburn Spit in Crimea rather than Kherson Oblast. We reported Ukrainian attacks northwest of Kharkiv City rather than Kherson City. And we reported Ukrainian operations continuing southwest of Izyum, near Lyman, instead of southeast of Izyum. We apologize for these errata, which have been corrected in the 9/15 update text.

Key Takeaways

The discovery of mass graves and torture chambers in liberated Izyum confirm previous ISW assessments that the Bucha atrocities were emblematic of Russian activities in occupied areas rather than an anomaly.

Russian President Vladimir Putin apparently threatened to expand Russia’s attacks on civilian Ukrainian infrastructure if Ukraine continues reported attacks on military facilities in Russia.

The Ukrainian Resistance Center warned that Russian forces may conduct false flag attacks in occupied areas between September 17 and September 20.

Ukrainian forces captured all of Kupyansk City on September 16, continuing offensive operations east of the Oskil River.

Ukrainian forces reportedly shelled targets in Valuyki, Belgorod Oblast, Russia, overnight on September 15-16.
Ukrainian forces struck Russia’s occupation headquarters in Kherson, likely using HIMARS, and are continuing ground maneuvers in three areas of Kherson Oblast as part of the ongoing southern counteroffensive.

Russian administrative officials are rallying around Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov’s call for “self-mobilization” at a local level to provide additional forces to the Russian military.

Forced Russian mobilization campaigns are likely depleting male populations in parts of the claimed territory of the Russian proxy Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics (DNR and LNR) along the front lines.

Immediate and coordinated Russian information responses suggest that Ukrainian partisans may not be responsible for the September 16 assassination of the Luhansk People’s Republic (LNR) Prosecutor General and his deputy.

For Putin. Prior to this when has he ever been seen being drug along by another world leader? This abnormal, but as weakness of Putin, not something to be scared of.

Putin is in a very precarious position. And he might be dead or deposed within the year.

At first blush that seems like great news. He's emiserated a lot of people including many Russians and Ukrainians.

But what followed his downthrow might be worse. Bigger monsters than Saddam, Uday, and Qusay were nearly impossible to find. But their deaths were tied to an era of chaos and tragedy.

Power abhors a vacuum. The question of how to make Russia and the former Soviet states more stable and better places to live is just as important as stopping Putin's current warmongering.

Kinda wonder if he is the glue that keeps that entire area together. Could up being a huge Syria type deal if he departs.

Both were part of the USSR. Russia is closer to Armenia because they are both Christian nations. Azerbaijan is Shiite Muslim - like 96%.

Azerbaijan is trying to distance itself from Russia. When I was in Nur Sultan this summer a Kazakh told me - and my Azerbaijani host agreed - “We are not running away from Russia; we are walking away very quietly.”

They know that when Russia is strong it will seek to subjugate them again. They want to get so far from Russia - and NATO is the Holy Grail - that Russia will not dare to interfere with them.

The fact that Russia cannot help Armenia is yet another sign that they are getting creamed in Ukraine.

BTW, both the Kazakhs and the Azerbaijanis thought Russia was going to win this war.

ETA: Don’t plan on enjoying any meals in Kazakhstan. Horse meat at every friggin meal, and I had to drink horse milk at one.

Baku, on the other hand, is very European. I would recommend it if you’re ever in the neighborhood.

I would also add; How do you accomplish all this with China & Iran in the neighborhood....

Their influence/interests would be hard to ignore...

I’m reading too far into this but it almost looks like Erdy is supporting Putin. Putin looks hunched over a bit too. Beyond that, I’m a man and I walk by myself. Only my wife will hold my arm.

I had a Kazakh client here in Baton Rouge who told me about buying horsemeat to prepare Kazakh food. It's not easy to buy horsemeat in the US, but apparently, it's possible.
