They are both ostensibly Russian allies, and Russia has military bases in both countries. Russian troops and military assets would be significantly endangered by a broader war, and one of the two countries would likely end up turning against Russia, so Russia needs to mediate a quick end to the conflict.

Both are CSTO (Russia's version of NATO) members. It would be like if Slovakia and the Czech Republic started shooting at each other. Russia is supposed to be bound by treaty to mediate. Also if one or both of the dictators of those countries falls then that creates a power vacuum and instability in a muslim nation that is in the CSTO and CIS and therefore very easy to have citizens to get into Russia. I am sure that Russia is very interested in keeping its puppet dictators in power and stable in both of those countries which border Afghanistan where ISIS is making a comeback. The last thing Russia or the world in general needs is more unstable muslim nations to provide ISIS and other Islamic extremists a place to expand.

Power abhors a vacuum. The question of how to make Russia and the former Soviet states more stable and better places to live is just as important as stopping Putin's current warmongering.

Both were part of the USSR. Russia is closer to Armenia because they are both Christian nations. Azerbaijan is Shiite Muslim - like 96%.
Azerbaijan is trying to distance itself from Russia. When I was in Nur Sultan this summer a Kazakh told me - and my Azerbaijani host agreed - “We are not running away from Russia; we are walking away very quietly.”
They know that when Russia is strong it will seek to subjugate them again. They want to get so far from Russia - and NATO is the Holy Grail - that Russia will not dare to interfere with them.
The fact that Russia cannot help Armenia is yet another sign that they are getting creamed in Ukraine.
BTW, both the Kazakhs and the Azerbaijanis thought Russia was going to win this war.
ETA: Don’t plan on enjoying any meals in Kazakhstan. Horse meat at every friggin meal, and I had to drink horse milk at one.
Baku, on the other hand, is very European. I would recommend it if you’re ever in the neighborhood.

I’m reading too far into this but it almost looks like Erdy is supporting Putin. Putin looks hunched over a bit too. Beyond that, I’m a man and I walk by myself. Only my wife will hold my arm.

I had a Kazakh client here in Baton Rouge who told me about buying horsemeat to prepare Kazakh food. It's not easy to buy horsemeat in the US, but apparently, it's possible.
