At what point does the advance stop to regroup and firm up the advance.

From my uninformed and untrained armchair, it would seem like the Oskol River would be a good regrouping point because it creates a barrier to protect the thinned Ukrainian troops on one side.

I don’t pretend to be a military tactician but the logic of the Ukrainian action has been solid and understandable throughout this entire conflict. They will in all likelihood make a real good decision on this.

EDIT: and what Obtuse wrote above. Very logical.

One possibility is that it is not the logistics support units but actual combat units crossing back into Russia to take the longer but safer route around to reinforce Kupyansk.

Why does every Ukrainian city and geographic feature have two different spellings in English? Is it Russia v Ukranian?

I've been looking at the maps trying to figure out what Ukraine's next move might be. I think you could be right; however the Kupyansk rail yard is on the other side of the river so the Ukrainians will have to establish on both sides.

If you look at a map of the area, there are no major north south roads beyond Kapyunsk for 100KM. There is a minor highway running N/S about 40 miles east of Kapyunsk. I think the Ukranians will take from Kapyunsk south...They will focus on retaking Severdonstk since they can attack from multiple axis.

North of Kupyansk I think they will probably stay on the west side of the river and focus on clearing everything west of the river up to the Russian border. This would give them the strategic city of Vovchansk.

ETA: The Ukranians might go to Savatove, it will become a focal point as it is a crossroads between a major E/W highway and the minor N/S highway 40km from Kapyunsk.

This red line is where i think they will stop.

Yes, there's the pronunciation differences in Ukrainian vs. Russian and since neither uses the Roman alphabet, there's the additional issue converting alphabets. Neither uses the Roman alphabet, of course, but the Russian Cyrillic alphabet and Ukrainian Cyrillic alphabets aren't entirely the same (they each have 4 letters the other doesn't have).

The Ukrainians would do well to make a lot of craters in that highway at and just across the border.

Speaking of HARMs I learned a couple of days ago something, I am sure our resident AF and military airpower enthusiasts already knew, is besides just being a missile it can be used as a sensor array so as to not need a radiation sensor pod.

It seems like a tough language.

In the politics of the war, when you're battling over disputed territory, if you convince outsiders to use your pronunciation of place names subtly influences them to see them in one political domain or another. During periods of harsh Russian colonialism, they've banned Ukrainian entirely and in Russian-occupied areas, they're Russifying govt and education. We're reading recently that Ukraine recently stopped teaching Russian in Kiev schools (though probably not across the country).

Heartwarming footage from Ukraine.

First official Russian Ministry of Defense Statement on Kharkiv area.

Via Rybar

???????? Official statement of the Russian Ministry of Defense on the situation in the Kharkiv region.

In order to achieve the goals of the NMD, a decision was made to regroup troops in the areas of Balakleya and Izyum in order to build up efforts in the Donetsk direction.

Within three days, an operation was carried out to curtail and transfer the Izyum-Balakliya group of troops to the territory of the DPR.

A number of distracting and demonstration activities were carried out with the designation of the real actions of the troops. In order to prevent damage to the troops of the Russian Federation, a powerful fire defeat was inflicted on the enemy using aviation, missile troops and artillery.

The RF Armed Forces destroyed more than 2,000 Ukrainian and foreign fighters, as well as over 100 pieces of armored vehicles and artillery in three days.

Better late than never. Thank you.

Here we reproached the Ministry of Defense for keeping silent about the situation taking place in the Kharkiv direction. We take back our words.

It would have been better if they had remained silent.
