It appears that Ukraine has stepped up it's offensive in the Kherson region.

Can Russia hold them back?

We should know fairly quickly.

Kherson city fell to Russia early in the war and sits on a strategic location west of the Dnipro river.

On Saturday, UK defence officials reported heavy fighting near Kherson.

The Ukrainian advance meant that Russian supply lines west of the river were "increasingly at risk", according to their assessment.

Earlier this month, Ukraine's Deputy Prime Minster Iryna Vereshchuk urged Kherson residents to evacuate the city as soon as possible to avoid becoming trapped in the city during a counteroffensive in southern Ukraine.

"It is necessary to do so for the Armed Forces of Ukraine not to endanger the civilian population during offensive operations," she told state TV.

There has been a lot of talk in the thread over time around the wear and tear being inflicted on Russian artillery tubes.

Here is some proof of that

British Defence Intelligence
UPDATE ON UKRAINE 25 July 2022
INTELLIGENCE UPDATE

Inconclusive fighting continues in both the Donbas and Kherson sectors. Russian commanders continue to face a dilemma; whether to resource the offensive in the east, or to bolster the defence in the west.

On 18 July 2022, intelligence identified a Russian military vehicle refit and refurbishment facility near Barvinok, in Russia's Belgorod Oblast, 10km from the Ukrainian border. At least 300 damaged vehicles were present, including main battle tanks, armoured personnel carriers, and general support trucks.

In addition to its well documented personnel problems, Russia likely continues to struggle to extract and repair the thousands of combat vehicles which have been damaged in action in Ukraine.

Armed Forces of Ukraine gain fire control over Russian logistics routes in Kherson region
Monday, 25 July 2022, 12:15

The Armed Forces of Ukraine are keeping the Russian invaders’ logistics routes in Kherson Oblast under fire control, which increases the advantage of the Ukrainian military.

Source: Natalia Humeniuk, head of the joint coordinated press centre of the Southern Defence Forces of Ukraine, live on the national 24-hour newscast

Quote: "We control the logistics routes and modes of movement with fire control. They try to conceal the delivery of ammunition under the guise of humanitarian cargo. This is a long-established practice that we have been familiar with since their actions in the Donbas.

But they just do not have very large capacities right now and they cannot use the logistics routes that we control. This also creates conditions for our advantage to be greater and greater."

Details: Humeniuk noted that counter-battery tactics - remote combat (long-range attacks and air strikes) - are currently being used in Kherson Oblast, since it is not feasible for one unit to approach another due to the open terrain.

For all the talk about tanks and tank numbers early in the conflict, why haven’t we seen massed attacks of Russian tanks? Is it because of the inadequate air cover? Lack of infantry to support the tanks?

After the stymied attacks on the capitol, the internet was anticipating a Russian steamroller of armor, and instead it’s been a very static conflict.

Say one, I thought Russia and their tanks would toll up the Ukranians. That didn’t happen. There’s been no blitzkrieg.

This is because the pundits (even so called experts) thought that it was flat land in the east. The plains are in the south and series of valleys and ridges in the east. Russia did make good use of its breakout along a ridge at Popansa after months of trying to find a weak spot in the line.

Topography actually matters even when it is a few hundred feet higher/lower.

It's not only just wear and tear...

This barrel from the Russian BMP was filmed by Ukrainians.

It's criminal. That barrel is going to fail catastrophically. Maybe chrome is right and it can't even be used but to let your countrymen go out in the field with that says a lot about the Russian mindset. Or maybe that was intentional? IDK.

How is it even possible to rifle a hole that out of center? The barrel would be wobbling all over the place on the lathe.

If for non-military use, that is standard in Russia. This would never meet standards in the West. Likely Soviet Era made but that hasn't changed a lot since then.

The big question is whether or not the hole was centered at both end with this being a cross section cut from the barrel

I figured it was coming soon as much as they have been firing. Those tubes are probably glowing red everyday they are so hot from shell after shell. It was just a matter of time before they blew up. Probably wounded the crew of that gun too. Russia couldn’t care less if they blow up and kill their own men though so won’t do shite about it. That’s just an embarrassment to be honest that they allow all those guns to remain in service knowing full good and well that they all most likely need an overhaul.
