DHR finds out you're letting a child under the age of 22 stay at home alone while you enrich some corporation and they'll take your children away and let some transgendered dude in Seattle adopt them.

I had to move my kids carseat to the front seat one day bc of some stuff in the back. I was so worried about that bc it's "dangerous" and then I thought about lil patnuh in 1983 riding the hump and the back dashboard and figured she would survive.

My answer is based on the norms of the 1980's and early 90's, which have no bearing on 2018.
Why do you think the "norms of the 1980s and early 90s ... have no bearing on 2018"?

I don't see a problem with a first-grader getting off the bus, and either playing with his friends in the neighborhood for 2 hours or just coming inside to watch TV until a parent comes home.
a 6 year old with no older kids around?
yeah I disagree
Yeah, are we suggesting that was within the "norms" of the 80s and 90s? It wasn't.

Probably because one of his neighbors is going to post on the NH Facebook page or Nextdoor about the poor kid home alone and how irresponsible his parents are. Before he knows it, there'll be a picture of his kid walking home alone floating around, guilting him into submission.

The main reason for latchkey kids being older today is not because of the kids, it's because of the neighborhood.
30+ years ago, there were a lot more stay at home moms. So if your kids were latchkey kids, you knew there a few stay at home moms nextdoor, across the street, etc, to help in case an emergency came up.

The new refrigerators these days all come with Kid Drawers where you can put all their snack packs, crackers, juice boxes, etc where they can reach them. The whole culdesac including my house is under surveillance, and I'm not talking about that cheap shite from Sam's Club. The kid can operate the TV and use the bathroom by himself. We have a big fenced in backyard so we could also get a puppy for him to play with. I don't really see what the big deal is.

The difference today is that cars are made of plastic, not solid metal. Also airbags. What was a fender bender in 1983 is now a total loss with full airbag deployment, and it is the airbags that will jack your kid up if in a carseat in the front. Just fyi.

I have a 5 year old and in no way is she responsible enough to be left completely alone at the house
Maybe your 6 year old is the most mature 6 year old ever, but I have my doubts

I see kids all the time as young as 9-10 out riding bikes or at park by themselves. I have 4 kids and both jobs I work require me to be out in the public. Never understood why people think kids don’t go outside, if anything it’s the adults that never go outside the house when not at work. Kids up and down my neighborhood and others are outside pretty much all day, away from their parents, especially during the summer and weekends.

I remember on Facebook a few years ago some lady was bitching about kids from possibly 10-13 playing in a park with no supervision and posted pictures of them playing talking about shaming their parents. Sad thing is most of the people agreed with her.

This. Airbags deploy with a lot of force.
I've mentioned it before. We had a kid in our PICU that was internally decapitated cause of an airbag. His POS parent thought it was ok to let a 5 year old sit in the front passenger seat. Got into an accident and when the airbag deployed it hit the kid in the neck..internally decapitating him.

10 to 25 depending on the kid

i feel like as a 1st grader back in the 80's i would ride my bike a 1/2 mile to the elementary school and back home. so like 7 yrs old? i had a stay at home mom though.
i had younger siblings so i don't think they ever left us home alone for a couple hours until i was probably like 6th grade. so 11 or 12?

The school bus dumps my kid off at the plant and he totes my rod bucket

Are you still talking about a six year old? That's way to young to be home alone. There's tons of things a six year old could do to hurt himself. They aren't mature enough yet no matter how many security cameras etc. The age should be 10 to 12. Kids in this age are light years different then a 6 year old.

And yet we went to dinner last night with my buddy's family and his younger cousin was there.
She looked like a coked out 25 year old with huge stripper tits. She's 14. Her dad caught hell all evening for that one
