I think I was 10/11. Found my dads porn stash. The rest is history.

Why does the year matter? Plenty of kids are home by themselves after school, just like in the 80’s.

And with more women working today than ever before, I’d almost be willing to bet it’s more common now than ever.

I can remember when I was in middle school in the very early 00’s, a ton of kids rode busses and let themselves in because their parents weren’t home.

The bike racks at school were filled with bikes from kids who live close enough to bike to school, and many of them let themselves in when they got home.

And it depends on the kid when they are mature enough. And I see some people here blaming the kids for not being mature enough. That is the fault of the parents, in general.

Thank you sharing but that just completely fricked up my Friday.

How old/Big is old/Big enough to ride in the front? It’s been a long time since i have had to worry about it, but now that I have kids I want to know

Definitely depends on the kid.

This will be the first year my son (9 about to be 10) comes home on the bus and stays by himself for an hour or so. Some contributing factors that led to me allowing this:

- Mature for his age
- Well behaved
- Neighborhood is isolated with practically 0% crime

I don't see a problem with a first-grader getting off the bus, and either playing with his friends in the neighborhood for 2 hours or just coming inside to watch TV until a parent comes home.
Bruh. That is a 6 year old

My oldest two rode bikes to/from school all year last year at 11 and 8. They normally were home about 30 minutes in the morning and an hour in the afternoon alone.

I am contemplating whether our 5 year old can stay with them or not before/after school this year or if we should still send her to the babysitter during those times (we have moved recently and all will be bus riders this year). All 3 of them tend to be pretty reliable/responsible for their ages.

Oldest is starting junior high in a few weeks. He'll be latchkey.

I probably would have been fine with it in fifth grade TBH.

a 6 year old with no older kids around?

yeah I disagree

What if the kid is very smart and responsible, and there are two next-door neighbors that are home in case of an emergency?

My kids are latchkey kids. They are usually home for a few hours each afternoon. Hell we stopped getting a babysitter for most things.

My kids are 11 and 13 but we've been leaving them on their own since the youngest was 8. Both are damn fine kids and we haven't had any issues so far.

Had two older brothers, oldest being five years older than me.

I was getting myself up and ready for school on my own with them not assisting in first/second grade. My mom would just call from work to see we were up.

Rode bus home and hung out until she got home. It was just expected that we'd get up and go to school.

My paralegal does about 100 more things for her 12 year old twin kids than my mom ever had to do

From the CDC:

Only children over 12 should be in the front seat.

Life has taught me a very hard lesson that things can change in an instant and kids can be gone.

I'm not sure why you would chance it or rely on a neighbor that is not directly watching the kid.

This six year old would be alone every day after school correct? No older siblings watching them? My smart six year old could screw shite up quick and he doesn't know how to respond to an emergency. Hell I've seen six year olds still choke on food they didn't chew up all the way.

I would rather my son be at afterschool care playing with friends instead of taking a chance of leaving him alone.

Kids that 9 to 12 are a lot different then 6 and kids that have a older siblings are different.

You have convinced me.

Get her a coyote and let it watch her...age of 6 months will be just fine
