Maybe Walk-Ons will use this opportunity to support an industry that is important to the state it began in instead of importing shrimp.

Good
It’s complete BS that we have tons of shrimpers here whose families depend on them selling shrimp.
Then the state takes in the largest majority of another countries shrimp instead? That’s ridiculous. Support the local shrimpers

Maybe.
I'm sure there's some kind of catch, though.

Foreign seafood, especially that from anywhere around SE Asia, is suspect at best and damn near poison at worst. It accounts for over 40% of the rejected food imports coming into the US

I had some shrimp Biriyani in Chennai a couple weeks ago and it was actually pretty good. They have solid seafood there.

I'm against paying for seafood (except farmed catfish), period. I have my own personal vendettas against commercial fishing. BUT if I am going to buy it, I want it as local as possible. Preferably at the dock straight out the hold.
The problem is the global economy structure that really shouldn't be used for food but is. The problem with paying more is you certainly can but the boat won't ever see it, all the greasy bullshite in the middle is who gets the extra money. A healthy local food economy is a great thing to have, particularly with seafood.

Ultimately the easiest way to change it all is to have educated consumers, but unfortunately a large portion of our society just buys buys buys. It's also prohibitively expensive at times to buy local fish. I went to a fish monger in Charlotte and the dude wanted 30 plus dollars a pound for most fish. I make good money, but that's not sustainable.
You're not wrong. It's why so many restaurants, including along the Gulf Coast, serve imported shrimp and that swaii crap instead of U.S. catfish. I understand the economics, and sometimes eating out it's impossible to avoid (though I refuse to order something just labeled "fish" anywhere), but as a consumer buying the raw product to cook myself, it will never be asian shrimp. I'll buy imported seafood from time to time, but it has to be something like shrimp from Argentina, or gumbo crabs from Mexico, since HEB doesn't source Louisiana/U.S. gumbo crabs. And even that, those are just in a pinch.

Why do we need a tariff on this? Let the consumer decide what they are going to buy?
“ Effective January 1, 2025, Act 148 (Senate Bill 166) mandates that food establishments clearly display the country of origin for all seafood dishes, not just shrimp and crawfish, in a manner easily visible to consumers.”

The problem is that people aren't just eating out when it is unavoidable, and largely don't give a damn what they eat as long as it's cheap and looks fancy.
All of these problems should self-correct but the global economy prevents it. "Eating out" should be a luxury for most people, not a daily occurrence year round.

I only buy my shrimp from the docks or frozen from Big Easy Foods in LC. Make the tariff 75%.

Had no idea we imported that much shrimp. I typically buy Gulf of America shrimps.
