ETA--I love Metallica so much that everytime my tank crew would get ready to SP, I would play "Disposable Heroes" on the Abrams intercom to get my crew in the proper state of mind.
This fricks.

If Kurt was still alive today, he'd be completely insufferable and everyone here would hate him.

GNR was probably still selling more records in 1991. They released their Use Your Illusion albums the same year Nevermind came out.
they were released only a week apart from each other.

Nirvana and their ilk were ushering in the new school much to the chagrin of Axl Rose who often talked shite about Nirvana.
Axl Rose was actually a really big fan of nirvana and he wore their hat in the November Rain video. Pretty sure Axl invited them to open for GNR right after that and Kurt declined and said something like GNR isn’t their scene. That offended Axl and the rift was started.

The Black album was the epitome of overrated.
While it is overrated in comparison to their other albums, it is not overrated as an album as a whole. It was music that reached a broader audience than their original albums, which is why so many people "overrate it" as you say.
It is still leaps and bounds better than anything Nirvana released. Again, Nirvana is a good not great band whose influence on music is ridiculously overblown because of Cobain's death. It's that simple.

I love the Metallica albums before the black album and I also love the Black album. Not sure why that is so hard to say for Metallica fans.

quote:Thank God. Post-drugs Aerosmith sucks balls, and can count among their multiple crimes against humanity, responsibility for the single worst song ever shite into existence, "Dude Looks Like a Lady ", and RHCP have been doing the same three songs about California for thirty years.
Their music itself was decent but they’re no Red Hot Chili Peppers or Aerosmith.

I like the Foo Fighters and love Grohl but Nirvana was better and had a greater impact.

As many have said, they aren’t the greatest band of all time or anything but they were a band that changed the course of rock music. Like it or not, there’s only a few bands that can claim something like that and Nirvana is one of them.
Also their mtv unplugged set is pretty fricking awesome.

Metallica was still a bigger band worldwide than Nirvana.

Agreed. They are up there w/the Beatles in that regard.

I don’t think it’s even a debate, but you’re welcome to present your case for why Nirvana was bigger worldwide in the early 90s than Metallica.
For the record I really like both bands, but Metallica was a much larger draw in the early 90s.

Kurt was a good songwriter, didn't care for his musicianship though. Grohl was definitely the most skilled musician of the group and it's no surprise that they didn't really take off until he came over from DC.
Don't really car for him in particular as a person either, some of his glorification even all these years later still kind of bothers me. Dude was a junkie and killed himself to leave a baby girl fatherless with Courtney Love of all people as her mother.

That's right they were selling Nirvana shirts 30 years after the band was popular. Why would kids today still be buying Nirvana merch?
The same reason people in the late 80's early 90's were buying Doors merchandise.
While The Doors were good, without a doubt Jim Morrison dying made The Doors more popular than they would have ever been if he was still alive.
"Live fast and die young" and "it's better to burn out than to fade away" are both major things that often lead to reaching rock and roll stardom.
