paper towels do a slightly better just of cleaning granite surfaces.
Microfiber??? Between cloth towels and microfiber, it's taken me 3.5 years to go through one 8 roll package of Bounty.

my dad used to rip the paper towels up to make them last longer.
Now some are perforated.
Some? When is the last time you saw a roll of paper towels that wasn't perforated?

Grew up with sponges in the sink to clean dishes, paper towels to wipe up quick messes, and dish rags to do a real counter top cleaning.
My house is currently the same way. We throw out sponges like once a month and have a rack for them to dry and put them in the dishwasher too. I find old/dirty sponges to be disgusting. There has to be ridiculous amounts of bacteria on them.
ETA:
We have a laundry basket in the pantry and wash the rags after a single day's use.

We use mostly dish towel, and scrub brushes for dishes. We were at Sam's one day and I showed my wife you could buy a 15 pack of dish towels for 1/2 the price of a pack of paper towels.

Back in the 70s they had disposable dish rags that you could wash a few times and then throw away.

I'm extremely liberal in my paper towel use
The 12 big rolls from Costco (which are an elite Kirkland product) are like 22 bucks. You'd be using a huge roll a day, maybe more.

dish towels 90%
paper towels have one use in my kitchen but there’s no other option…for wiping out cast iron cookware, and re-oiling when clean

We had a dish rag when I was growing up, but I don't think my parents have one now (just a drying towel).
I have a drying towel out at all times, which I will use to clean the countertops after I spray them down, but I use paper towels to clean the stove itself some of the time. We don't keep a "wet" rag anywhere. It's all towels.
I also use Clorox wipes for things like wiping the table. Just depends.
We use paper towels as napkins with meals. Buying napkins as a totally separate product seems silly when we already have paper towels.

I don’t know what it is about women that makes them leave wet dish rags in the sink but it seems to be a universal trait. It’s drives me absolutely insane. Those things start to stink after a few hours and I see red every the I see a wet rag in the sink.
They are saving it for the next time they need to wash a dish or dry the counter. Ignore the fact that they just get a new one the next time and put it right next to the old one.

Walmart price for a 12 double roll pack of bounty select a size is around $35. $50 is around 17 rolls. Or over half a roll a day. Roughly 45 sheets/day for a 90 sheet/roll. Thats ridiculous. A 12 pack lasts us about 3 months but we get Kirkland brand which work just as good as bounty. $24/ pack…$8/month.

Microfiber.
ETA: a 24 pack is $10 on Amazon. Put a couple in every room that might need them. Move the paper towel dispenser so it's slightly inconvenient to get to. Wipe up spills, dust, grab crumbs, clean the refrigerator handles, the stove, the range exhaust, etc.

Let me guess, y'all used cloth diapers for the babies too, just because you had a washing machine?
I think you missed my point. I use paper towels. I also use dish rags. I wash them when they’re dirty rather than leave them on my counter for multiple days. And I've never used a cloth diaper.
