potentially. if verified, and immediate family i would likely let the person slide still.

would likely charge them, unless i could re-rent the space

got the flu? or extended hospital stay? if life changing type of illness id likely let it slide. if something short of that, probably charge them, with possible flexibility based on how extreme the illness and how easy to re-rent
1. This is what insurance is for. Why even have insurance if you're going to do everything on a case by case basis?
2. You don't think people BS there way through these and lie half the time?
Your logic has them just giving out refunds left and right completely defeating the purpose of even having insurance in the first place.

I think I would have taken a different tact on social media. I would have used it to advertise that space is available due to very unfortunate circumtances and added the link for people to rent. I would not blast the company, but would have given a small reasonable explanation in my post and ask people to share the link for those looking for a Labor Day getaway.
Chances are if both give a little, you can reach a solution.

What a perfect comparison to losing all your possessions. You usually make great arguments, this was not one of them.
Even if I had lost all my shite, I'd surely most likely still call and try to get a refund. But I sure as hell wouldn't go blasting a company on Social Media because of my cheapness or screw up. I can take accountability for my own shortcomings.
ETA: I'm surprised you said I usually make good arguments, I appreciate that!!

How do you know the owner of that condo is not located in one of the flooded areas and is counting on the rental to fund the repairs
Maybe they should have cancellation insurance. Or flood insurance. Or maybe be able to afford the fricking condo without depending on rentals.
I too can play the make up imaginary shite rhetoric game.

So this tiny rental company should eat the cost because they deal with smaller/shorter term contracts while the mega banks get to collect? I don't follow
I think they could probably survive missing the commission on a one week rental. If not they have bigger problems. They're just going to rent it again anyway. It's Labor Day weekend. Someone will take it.

So you want the owner to have insurance but the renter who had the option and ignored so you are pissed at the owner.
Oh man. I bet you are voting for Hillary.

Posting on social media to have hundreds of people who had never heard of this company give them a poor rating is deplorable. These people are absolute shitbags.
Don't hate the player, hate the game. Part of running a successful business is considering outcomes/possible consequences of your decisions. Unfortunately, now social media plays a big part in that.

No I was just pointing out how far the logic of needing insurance to justify some act of kindness can go in reply to an earlier post.
Also, you'd be wrong. Look at my profile picture. Like Donald himself I'm in favor of showing human kindness when the situation calls for it.

Saying they should refund the renters who opted out of insurance because the property owners should have cancellation and flood insurance?
Solid footing....

It always has. It's called word of mouth, goodwill, reputation, and customer service. The only difference now is you can get held accountable for your lack of these things more publicly. Businesses who put profit ahead of customer service usually find this out the hard way.

Equally as solid as the point I was replying to.

You can tell that none of the people in that FB page have ever been a landlord.

charity is now considered customer service?

Some of you act like contracts only exist so people will have to buy ink pens.

True. But I am and I'd cut these folks some slack nonetheless.
