Parents are not allowed back in the hospital operating rooms for various types of other surgeries. You lose the sterile environment. Most dentists who have that in place are doing it for that reason and only for bigger procedures. Filling seems excessive, but like others said, it might just be where he draws the line with things so the kids are better behaved.

Get your logic out of here, the dentist is obviously a child molester!!!

I think kids need to learn that not everything is harmful.
When our kids were young or maybe just their first dentist visit we might have went back there, but that’s it.

The dentists that are allowing parents in the room are also probably the ones that are more likely to insist that the procedure be done under oral sedation. It's funny how these anxious Karen's are so willing to expose their precious little johnny to the additional, real risk of being sedated so he doesn't have a scary experience.

Sounds like they are rabid anti-dentites.

Maybe you were the perfect parent and had kids with perfect teeth, for that i commend you. I'll just continue to keep my ship pointed in the right direction as best i can.

Fair enough. I am a dentite (son of a dentist), so we tend to be a little judgment on bad oral hygiene.

I know you live in the LP, where bad teeth are the norm. You know I'm totally messing around in this thread. Sort of.

aint that some shite

let me ask you as someone in the field, is it normal for an adult to be behind closed doors alone with a child? i would think that's not normal and likely against some sort of internal policy.

Back in my day, we did our own dentistry. For a cavity, we'd fill it with caulk, dry it with the leaf blower, file it down, and done. Saved a ton of money.

Nope. I live in the NYC suburbs. I’ve only had one or two cavities in my life, and so far, my kids collectively have only had one, maybe two counting baby teeth. I’m just not some dumb frick redneck who thinks that sending young children back by themselves in what is an anxious situation is teaching them to live independently.

I’m not talking about 10 year olds and older. I’m talking about young children on their first few trips to the dentist. But I get the OT. Most here are also proud to force their kids out on their own at 18 and probably refuse to help pay for college at all. They also think that mowing their own grass is some sort of God blessing virtue. Whatever. I’ll help my kids be successful in life as much as I can, and I’m fortunate enough to have the means to do so. I also pay someone to cut my grass.

Lulz. Nice flex, bitch.

My reading comprehension was fine. Yours, and apparently your grammar too, on the other hand.

I was simply replying to the post about the mother giving her child so much gatorade that he/she required multiple crowns.

When I was in dental school in Ohio, this situation would require the dentist to inform Child Protective Services.

operate under the premise that you trust absolutely no one with your child until they are old enough to identify and defend against improper behavior from another person. I know if 3 people who’s children were sexually assaulted, one done by a 12 year old neighbor boy who was a babysitter for their son (1 hour grocery & gas run a mile away) and another done by a teacher.

To be fair:

Left alone with a preteen for an hour

And

In an often not at all secluded room with a dentist, hygienist and likely plenty of other foot traffic

Are very different standards of risk for the child getting touched inappropriately

I never go in the op with a female of any age or a male minor without a female assistant or hygienist present.

Why did it take five pages to get to this? I can't recall meeting a male hygienist in the last 35 years. Even during a procedure, there is always a female hygienist assisting, taking notes on what the dentist/ortho is saying about particular teeth, etc.

Is there a risk that a dentist is running a grooming ring enabled by five female hygienists? Sure. But it's far lower than the risk of the parents that let 10 year olds right in the front fricking seat of the car.

This is very normal. A large portion of pediatric dental offices have this requirement for actual treatment. I would say maybe it’s more common in the older generation of pediatric dentists though.. Kids will almost 100% act worse if their parents are in the room during a procedure. If you don’t like it that’s fine. Go somewhere else.

And yes it’s also very common for children to have cavities at a young age. Kids have no clue how to brush their teeth properly and many parents don’t do their part in helping. And giving little Johnny juice and soda every day doesn’t help either.
