How do you handle screen time for your kids. Is it something that you track? Do you care? I was reading on it and most experts say 2 hours for say a 7 year old per day but the average is like 6-8 hours in the real world.

The only screen my sons will be looking at is a bubble or slip.

This one has been tough since COVID.

A few months ago, my kids rarely asked to use a tablet or play video games. They spent 75% of their time (if not more) out running the neighborhood (I live on a military base so I'm pretty comfortable letting them do that).

But once the stay at home orders came about and they had to stay in, their screen time has gone up. My 6 year old has definitely gotten hooked on watching shows and playing on their Nintendo Switch.

Thankfully, they're able to play outside with the neighborhood kids again, but they still play video games and watch shows more than they used to.

Pretty much the only way you can prevent screen time is by being more active in their home life. Not throwing an a tv show and ignoring them but doing things with them around the house/ outside

I saw an article yesterday that now says not to worry about screentime anymore.

Part of the keep schools closed propaganda on CNN.

Don't track it and don't really care. My daughter is 3 and watches TV and plays on a tablet, but also plays outside and has a vivid imagination she uses to play with non-screen things every day. If she tries to disappear in her room with the tablet, we limit that. And we definitely don't use screens as a "baby sitter."

My kids watch a good bit of TV now with the lockdown. Their tablets only have educational programs so I’m ok with them playing on them for a while, especially when they are doing jigsaw puzzles, addition games, word games, things like that.

Also my kids are 6 and 4

Yeah, I assume it's more of a problem for preteens and the like who will sit and play fortnite for 10 hours a day if allowed.

Hell, I'm lucky if my 3 year old will still still long enough to watch wall-e while I cook dinner.

Mine is the queen of wanting to watch a movie only to want to change it or do something entirely different after 15 minutes

Anybody who tries to force their kids out of screen is only setting them up for failure. I don't like it, but that's the way the world is going. I'd try to direct them to shite that will be productive and fun. In my early teens I thought learning CSS was really fun. I never got very good at it, but it kept my interest and even a decade and a half later I still have some baseline knowledge that's come in handy.

Lean into it rather than try to prohibit it.

do you think it is healthy to allow a 7 year old to play on a phone for 6-8 hours a day?

Through the summer, they have gotten 30 minutes in the morning and 30 in the evening but that’s it.

Depends on what they're doing on it. Plenty of learning apps. Outside of potentially messing up their eyesight, I don't see it as a huge issue today.

My 7 year old will watch movies every now and then but hes mainly riding his bike in the neighborhood and playin with neighborhood friends.

The 6 year old spends a little more time inside because the neighborhood kids are mostly older than him but he plays outside a good bit too.

I wish my 4 year old would sit down and watch a movie. Kid is constantly underfoot.

Maybe once a week we'll give them a couple hours on a tablet, but really the only screen they have access to is a TV and they get bored with that after a little while.

There were a couple times during the stay at home where we let them use the tablets for 4-5 hours a day because wife and I were trying to get work done.

Most adults spend that much time in front of a screen... so is there really a problem?

It's gone way up since quarantine for sure. We used to not worry about it, but now we have to limit it. Luckily they like playing lots of toys and doing crafts.

Not at all. But I think that has more to do with them not having other options. If you want them to do stuff, try to get them interested in other activities or set reasonable limits. The people I'm referring to are the parents who tout that "their kids aren't getting a cell phone until they are 16". That's just silly and will lead to them being stunted.

6-8 hours on a tablet for anybody is excessive, especially if they aren't working/building something. Do you have any trails nearby? Or a river or lake you can go on? Go do something outside.

I got my 8 and 10 years old niece and nephew each a hoverboard. They live on those things.

My brother says it has cut their screen addiction way down, but at the expense of walking.

We’ve started playing board games as a family in the evenings. This really helps limit both ours and our kids screen time.
