A lot of good people in Kaplan, some bad people too. But mostly good people. Believe it's Sammy Kershaw's hometown. Girls in that area are beautiful....mostly. Hey, I married a girl from that area. Dang that woman can cook.

Kaplan nope.
My grandfather who could not speak English only French. He use to take me to Kaplan to get groceries when I stayed a few weeks in the summer at his farm. A lot of people spoke French back then.
Kaplan just a really small town and not growing much. People are nice.
Abbeville crime wise is getting worse.
It is a little larger town just not growing much either.
Northern part of the Parish where it use to be farms around Leroy and Maurice is where the subdivisions are coming up. Closer to I-10 if you go to Duson and get to the interstate bypassing Lafayette.

I am from Kaplan and like many small towns, everyone knows everything about you and your family. The only reason to live there is if you were born there or you work nearby. The real estate is relatively cheap. But you will find nice houses next to shacks.
The High School is very good and the only night life is at some of the local bars. In other words, go to Lafayette. The cooking is fantastic.
Now I graduated from Kaplan High School in 1967. What I just wrote was true then and is still that way.
But I must say that Abbeville is much worse. Probable the best town to live in in Vermilion Parish is either Maurice or Gueydan.

Read a history of Kaplan High school written by a former principal. Considering the size of the town an unusually large amount of graduates have gone on to become doctors, lawyers or what's otherwise known as "degree'd professionals".

My wife is from Kaplan. Word of advice...don't bring her ANYWHERE IN PUBLIC. She will somehow meet someone that she knows EVERYWHERE YOU GO! It may even be a coworker who you had no idea was from Vermilion Parish. Or a coworker's wife. And you magically find out that your boss's wife was best friends with her aunt, and another (older) co-worker dated your mother-in-law in high school.
But that could just all be a weird coincidence...

Sammy’s last name was actually Cashat, but he changed it to Kershaw when he was trying to make it big. Maybe that has something to do with it, I really don’t know though.
