How you grew up has a lot to do with preference. It is literally encoded into your dna (ie tribes living in the arctic circle walking around barefoot). Desert life gives me a preference of 74-76. If I need more a ceiling fan does just fine. In fact, I am cold when the AC is blowing straight on me from the register

I grew up with my AC on 80 permanently under threat of severe corporal punishment.

It was like a sip of water for a man dying in the desert when we heard that compressor kick on for what seemed like 5-6 minutes then agonizingly silent for at least an hour.

My dad would take us to the library after church on Sunday (library didn't open until 2pm so there was often an hour spent in the car with the windows down waiting for it to open.

We would walk in and that sweet sweet elixir of cold air would hit us....I would find a good Hardy Boys book and make a beeline for a nook somewhere and spend the next 2 hours enjoying that ice cold air and a good story.

Eta my dad's "there's always money in the banana stand" line was "the library is the coolest building in town."

We just assumed they had a better ac system.

If you have a good dehumidifier 74 is fine if not it is hot.

My nest is scheduled in 15 minute increments. I have lowered the AC run time by 3ish hours. 30 minutes before I wake up, it raises to 72 degrees. That way the bathroom is warmer while I shower and what not. As soon as I get out of the shower it returns to 70. That lasts until 10 am. It gradually raises by 1 degree until it hits a high of 74. At five pm it trends downward. 72 being the last step before sleep. At 10 pm it drops to 69.

The goal is humidity never goes above 52%.

About once a month I toss the temp sensor under the covers and drop the house REALLY cold

We have one unit upstairs that stays on 74 and the 2 downstairs stay on 72. No one is upstairs during the day....it gets pretty warm until about 7 PM and then cools down nicely. Down stairs is almost chilly. My 84 YO dad and my wife are usually cold...power bill runs about $180 a month from April to October. Only upside I know of for owning a row house in a new development....the windows and insulation are PROPER LOL. I changed the filters in the attic Sunday around noon and it was less than 100 degrees in the attic. House was probably built in about 4 weeks and akin to a mobile home quality but it is properly insulated and the windows are spot on....

74 is the optimal indoor home temperature.

Just so you know the reason everyone cancels on you when you try to have people over is because you have your house set to sauna.

Think it has more to do with age. Lot's of fat old people have there temp set high too.

Mine is usually around 72-73 for the common areas of the house. Master bedroom generally stays on ice cold, especially at night.

Can someone tell me why my AC just went down 1° in four hours last night?
Set it to 70 at 6 PM when it was 76 indoors

At 10 it was 75 and midnight 74

The filters are fine and I don’t see any water in the pan

We have ours set to 78. Nobody likes visiting us in the summer, but I don’t like high utility bills.

How is it that you know at what temperature everyone else is comfortable?

Thermostat set to 74

How lame is that?

Baw, you need to jack that setting up-- you're stressing the grid, in a rapidly changing climate.

Sounds like your system is oversized if it is very hot outside.

When I got Sensei thermostats, I was shocked to see how humid the air was in my house downstairs. (85%). Pier and beam. AC ran constant last summer . This summer i bought a $250 dehumidifier and its made a world of difference. We can keep it on 75 and its comfortable because the air is so much drier, and the AC works less to cool the dry air as opposed to the normall saturated air. No shite I'm removing 8 gallons of water in the air in a 24 hour period. (1.6 gallon hold, emptying every 5 to 6 hours), I'm about to set up a permanant drain to bypass the bin so I don't have to empty it 4 to 5 times a day. One of the best things I ever bought. AC running almost half the time it ran in June last year.

Count me in the group that sets mine to 74-75 during the day and then 70 at night.

Can't do it with these windows.

Some fricking pricks on this thread. I fixed the AC once I had enough money.

Mine stays at 77 WTF you sweat hogs

76 in the summer here. Hell, if the outside temperature is in the mid to upper 90's, then 76 feels like a cool oasis.

In the winter months, my thermostat is set no higher than 68-----if the heat is even on. When the wife is out the house, I turn off the heat until she is about to head back home from work just to warm it up a bit.

I keep 'em at bay by acting like a general prick....and the house is cool.
