Sometimes they destroy the part that lets the nail grow back. I'm curious if that's what the OP got. I'm guessing not since it was just a fungus issue. From what I understand it'll never grow back right if your toenail bed is damaged.

Like the DR cut them off? I didn't know this was a thing. I have had fungus toenails since HS, I am convinced it was playing/practicing football in the rain and wet fields. Don't really cause any issues other than being ugly. Not sure it would be worth having them removed, that shite sounds painful.

The 4 shots of Lidocaine around the 3 toes with the fungus was one of the worse pains I’ve ever felt in my life. I legit thought I was going to faint or throw up. After 30 minutes, I felt a little better. I couldn’t even feel when the doctor removed the toenails.
He gave me some anti bacterial medicine, anti fungus medicine, Percocet and some other stuff for the pain. It’s still all wrapped up super tight right now from the doctor, but when I shower before work tomorrow morning I have to take the wrapping off and lather the toes up with neosporin and bandaids.
I didn’t get the doctor to kill the nail follicles, so they will grow back eventually.
