From someone I don’t know and I have never opened a Venmo account. So what’s the catch?

It’ll show up as fraudulent in a few days. Whatever you do don’t send it back to the sender.

You can’t receive money through Venmo if you don’t have a Venmo account. Thought that would be obvious enough that this is a scam.

I accidentally sent someone $85 dollars once because the name was the exact same except for an underscore. They sent it back.

Assuming it is an email

You get this bait email of so and so sent you $$ through venmo, click the link to transfer

You click the link and it brings you to a legit looking site and ask you to enter banking info and then you just transferred all your money to them

If you’ve never had Venmo than it’s a scam. Happened to a buddy of mine not too long ago.

He got a venmo request from his father in law so he venmoed him. His FIL calls him asking why he Venmoed him and he told him bc you requested it.

Turns out his FIL Venmo got hacked and was requesting money from people

My aunt sent me money via Venmo once. I didn’t have Venmo. She said i was in her contacts. So I made an acct and there was the money. Hardly used it since then.

I use Venmo to pay hookers and for coke. It's untraceable.

I got an email saying that amount was put into my Venmo. There’s a link if I want to transfer it to my bank account.

New scam. Even if you do have Venmo, never send back money that was "mistakenly" sent to you. It's an Indian or Russian that's backed into that person's account, sent you "their" money, and requests it back from you. Now you and the person who got hacked are out X dollars. Let the bank resolve it.

oh gotcha, that makes sense. I was thinking you got a notification from venmo.

I said it before and I'll say it again- two things I cannot stand are a liar and a thief.

glad you didn't click the link

If you've never opened a Venmo account, then how did you get money sent to your Venmo?

If the money they sent you never left your venmo account. You can send it back. Pretty harmless.

And then you aren’t keeping someone’s money they accidentally sent you.
