not really... though i'm outside a lot so I could be just perma tanned. My hair and facial features are atypical of most AA's, though, and I think those are more reliable indicators of ethnic background. skin tone can be deceptive in that regard.
It's just always been a thing folks talked about looking at photos at my grandparents house or talking about our lineage. You'd hear "yeah, granny mother was cherokee..." and we all just assumed that's what she was. My mom even has a letter from an ancestor stating that was the case.

Benefits in personnel. They issue it just like an health insurance, dental, or vision coverage. My white privilege card is through bcbs. Little known fact about it...it gets you 20% off at the cracker barrel.

they take common genetic markers from people native to those regions and compare it against them.

Depending upon how many generations back the Native American ancestry was, markers for it may have been bred out. 23andMe explains this in their FAQ section. So it doesn't mean you don't have the ancestry, you just don't have any identifiable markers in your DNA.
Also, sometimes people don't realize that grandparents and such were adopted. That's why DNA tests can be helpful when studying your family tree.
