Didn't watch YT, but will now. Weight distribution and friction reduction was the key so far. Ours was a very basic design, too. I calculated center mass and told him where to glue the weights. Filed and polished axels. He spray painted and applied stickers. That took the most time. Like another poster said, I stopped at 4.8 oz. Got a feeling that will get me in later rounds. Our first year, and a lot of lessons learned.

Yeah, no way you haven't seen the video. It was insanely popular and everyone in Scouts knows about it now.

Yeah well I just killed it at the roller ring, my oldest kid 8 year old is taking lessons and there is open skate after, man I ain’t done that in 25-30 years, my wife (no pics) was sure I’d fall and told her friend that was there to report back with video of me, but told me when we got back how good I was.
I said of coarse I’ve told you I have great balance,
She said well how come your always running into shite around here.
Well I said they don’t serve beer there you know.

ETA

Rail riding is a new concept. I will see if anyone is doing it.

I won the pinewood derby, I mean my son won the pinewood derby 3 straight years.

I have a family member who is in metal finishing and he polished all the wheels and axels smooth. We removed all the weight out of the top and it always just a thin wood blade filled with lead on the bottom. I had tiny adhesive magnets to get it to maximum weight allowed the day of the race.

Three wheels touching the track - that sucker was fast. We just painted it different each year.

My boy scout troop allowed the parents to compete with no rules. My dad won the first year with a car made from a brick, someone won the next year with a 5 foot car ha.

How much weight were you able to add to the car? If not 4oz or more my kids car would smoke yours.

It's the internet. If you arent, then either you aren't very active in your den or your den doesn't care about the derby that much. A lot of dens have went to house rules or parents divisions so there wasn't a bunch of Mark Rober clones messing with the kid's fun.

My son raced 8-10 years ago. Rail running had been around for several years before then. We raced 4 wheels because I didn’t believe in that kind of stuff. He came in 4th but felt like he won because he said what others were doing wasn’t fair. 3/4 of the 35 or so kids ran rails.

I explained there was nothing in the rules about it and he knew I was blowing smoke up his arse.

We would dominate the pack but lose to guys who buy kit cars in the area council event at Bass Pro.

polished axle on 3 wheels, minimal design. B

I bet the internet has completely changed the game with the pinewood derby.

Why only polish 3 axles? We did all 4. I won my first meet, went to the regionals and lost there. I remember we sanded the wheels smooth amd made sure the car wasn’t touching the rails on any side.

I don’t quite understand what y’all are saying here. Do you intentionally raise one wheel a hair higher so it’s actually on 3 wheels instead of 4?

Update. Finished 2nd. Bro had all the things you guys described about 3 wheels and riding the rail. I did not. He also had this big arse half looking egg tunsden weight on top.

Less friction with removing one wheel touching the ground.

Here is the Mark Rober video, you can see how ghetto his car looks and it is actually really fast. There is only a few things that really matter when doing a car, the other stuff doesn't really matter that much.

You want the car to ride against the rail slightly and not bounce back and forth.

Years back there was a lady that took pictures of each car from different angle and showed up with photo albums at the state meet trying to catch people using past years winners.
