If you do that, kids will just go elsewhere. If you get a degree in Engineering, you're not passing up a job with one of the oil companies in Texas. LSU has minimal merit scholarships because of TOPS. If you take away TOPS, you better have significant increases in merit scholarships or you're losing a huge chunk of your quality students to out of state universities. My kid just got an email from Rice saying if your family makes under $80K, you're going for free. If you make $80K plus and demonstrate need, your student loans are guaranteed to be under $10K for the whole 4 years.

There's just about nothing that can be done

Jindal was paying companies to come here and they didn't even stay long

That's a good thing if they're leaving after graduation anyway

So penalize the student for lack of opportunity within the state.

The state is the problem, not TOPS.

A large drop off in LSU's enrollment, with a resulting large decrease in the quality of student would be good?

I wanted to stay in state after graduation but had a great offer in DFW and got shite for offers in LA. I understand the point he is making but it’s not like all these grads WANT to leave the state.

again, that's not a bad thing.

Why should the taxpayers be paying for degrees that aren't going to help the state? There's only so much demand.

I mean you kinda have to have enough good paying jobs to keep those graduates in state. Not all of them are going to go on and open their own business.

There are a limited number of positions at good companies in the State. That combined with the level of nepotism in the state... and its a no brainer for graduates to seek opportunities outside the state.

It's all a shell game.

State cuts funding. LSU raises tuition. Most kids at LSU are on TOPS. State pays TOPS. Move money from one bucket to another, state is still on the hook.

You get rid of TOPS, LSU will need to offer more merit scholarships. Will need more funding to offer more scholarships. Again, state is still on the hook.

The problem is that TOPS is not a replacement for a merit scholarship program. No college in America gives merit scholarhips for a 20 ACT and a 2.5 GPA. What we have here in LA, our great conservative paradise, isn't much different than the free college that Socialist Bernie Sanders is promoting.

The state does not have the money to pay for college education for average students. If that's something we want to do... we need to raise taxes to pay for it. Otherwise... we need to go back to the state paying for college for exceptional students. Average students can pay their own way, they can go get JUCO for a while, etc.

i get that, but intent doesn't really matter. pardon the cliche, but the bottom line is all that matters.

the taxes are going insane and will only go higher

Louisiana taxes now rival California's and New York's. If you make $50,000/yr the state of Louisiana taxes you 6% of your income. In California someone making $50K is taxes at 8% while in New York the rate is 6.45%. Sales tax in Louisiana is at ~9% and it is at 8.4% in CA and NY.

So you have an extremely high tax burden in a state that ranks dead last in just about every quality of life category possible.

well why should Louisiana (a) create a university system that produces so many graduates and (b) super subsidize that system with TOPS?
