Jonathon the giant tortoise

Celebrating his 190th birthday this year, Jonathan was just certified as the world’s oldest land animal and oldest turtle ever by Guinness World Records.
“His official record title is oldest chelonian – a category which encompasses all turtles, terrapins, and tortoises,” Guinness World Records writes. “The previous oldest chelonian was Tu’i Malila, a radiated tortoise that lived to be at least 188. Presented to the royal family of Tonga by Captain Cook c.1777, Tu’i Malila remained in their care until its death in 1965.
“Jonathan is believed to have been born c. 1832, thus making him 190 years old in 2022. Jonathan’s age is an estimation based on the fact that he was fully mature, and hence at least 50 years old, when he arrived in St Helena from the Seychelles in 1882. In all likelihood, he is even older than we think.”
An Aldabra giant tortoise named Adwaita died in March 2006 in India at an estimated age of 255, but Adwaita’s age has not been verified.

All the hares from his era are dead.
But 190 years. That's amazing.

The pic on the left is from 1886. That's kind of crazy to think about. Something photographed in 1886 is still alive today.

When asked for comment, Jonathan replied ‘190, bitches. Suck on that, Betty White!’

The article specifies that he's the oldest land animal, and that many sea creatures are much older. There was an article a while back about a 400 year old Greenland shark. That thing was born around the time the Pilgrims sailed.

Want to blow your noodle? There are Greenland sharks out there that have been alive since the Mayflower arrived
quote:
Often described as dinosaurs on Earth, Greenland sharks are an ancient shark species native to the cold Atlantic waters of Greenland, Iceland and the Arctic. These primaeval-looking animals regularly live 200+ years, with some of the oldest known examples living 400 years – placing them among the longest-living vertebrates in the world. What’s the secret to Greenland sharks’ long lifespan? Researchers agree it’s all down to the rate at which they grow, with the average shark not reaching full maturity until they’re a century old! That’s like being born in 1920, and not being allowed to vote until this year! It also has a lot to do with the cold waters they’re native to, which slows metabolism and cell degeneration.

This is pretty awsome! My wife and I breed African Leopard Tortoises and they live 80-100 years. Great pets to have.

My God he’s aged terribly

Someone should do a comprehensive list of all the major historical events Jonathan has lived through. That's pretty amazing!

When asked for comment, Jonathan questioned if those hats had come back in style.

He arrived on the island 10 years after Napoleon died there, and is still alive. That is mind-blowing.

gosh dang that is friggin awesome. I remember reading a story (it might not have been about the same tortoise) where they tried to bring a mate in to him and after a few years realized they'd put another male with him.

I saw Jonathon in person while on a cruise stop at St. Helena. Obviously, he has lived longer than my wife who was on the cruise with me but passed away five years ago. Every time I see an article about the tortoise, it brings a smile to my face.

His 190 year photo challenge looks virtually the same. Slight difference in the coloreds, that's about it.

Not doubting you on this, but what exactly do they do other than eat fruit and shite?
Are they interactive in some kind of way?
