He had a parachute on.
If he had jumped off the wing as soon as the plane started messing up, he most likely would have survived.

So walking out to the tip of the wing of a small airplane will alter its ability to fly? Although I am not a "aerospace engineer" I would have guessed that the aero dynamics would have been slighly effected by that.
