Anything will be more gooder than JW. Look at our numbers, we can't do any more bad. I still can't pass english 101.

He needed to go. With the passing of ESSA a few years ago, we only need to standardize test our kids in 4th and 8th grade and only in Math and ELA. Louisiana is on of the few states that still tests 3-12 in all subjects.

I am fearful of his replacement though.

They finally got heeem!!

This is bad news. He was a thorn in the side of the teachers unions in that he gave full-throated support to charter schools, which have absolutely improved education in some parts of the state.

I know some of you don't like his stance on common core. I'll say what I've said all along - LA education leaders aren't smart enough to come up with their own standards. This is not hyperbole - the standards in LA before common core were an absolute joke.

The only problem with Common Core is that we didn't do enough to force teachers to get on board with it, and to fully prepare themselves for it. That's lead to teachers who still don't understand it, using it. And it's lead to an over-reliance on crappy instructional tools and methods to take hold.

John White is one of the few things Jindal got right in his second term, even if they had a falling out in later years.

that's because we are tying teacher rankings to tests. There are better ways to rank teachers, but the unions won't like them.

Until someone shows me that we won't have valedictorians who need remedial subjects in college (like we had in the 90s), testing is a necessary evil.

The Federalist

If you don't like the source, I can find you several more articles just like this one. Common Core was an absolute failure nationwide. It had nothing to do with "teachers not getting on board."

Another hilariously bad statement. John White was unqualified for the position. He just promised Jindal to bring in vouchers which is what Bobby's Washington handlers told him to do.

Look, I am a teacher and not a pro-LAE/NEA/Union guy, but John White was a failure. The only thing I will give him any credit for was allowing the Jumpstart program to come back which is basically bringing back VOTECH. I'm not 100% sure he deserves any credit for that, but it happened under his watch.

I don't mind the source, but I wonder how we can assess it without having students go through the entire 12 years of it. Especially since we know that implementation at the higher grades was rough, to say the least.

Having said that, as a teacher, you should know the difference between standards and teaching methods. So I'm confused how the article you posted has anything to do with anything.

if you are against Common Core, what do you suggest as an alternative set of standards? And when do we blame the teachers / admins for screwing up implementation?

I graduated from a Catholic School with over a 3.5 GPA. My children go to public school in St. Tammany Parish, where they are taught Common Core. I still don't see the big issue with it, but apparently dumb people like to complain about it on Facebook.

I am an accountant, so I deal with numbers every day and nothing I see in my children's homework looks outlandish to me. They are in 2nd and 4th grade.

My opinion on teachers is that they are for the most part lazy and can't do anything else, so they take a state job with liberal time off and above average benefits. They like to call attention to themselves and if they are required to do anything above the bare minimum they take to Facebook and bitch.

Common Core is ruining muh babies!!!11

As a teacher who is part of a union, I don’t think most people in Louisiana and definitely on this board have any idea how little power teacher’s unions have. I could be fired for no reason tomorrow.
Unions are good for helping teachers with all the administrative crap we have to do know and having workshops/symposiums about various things. Unions aren’t wielding any real power though.
Standardized tests suck. No one likes them until they make the school look good. Then it’s all about the test scores.
I’ve got my ideas on how to improve things, but that’s another thread.

Seems like they have a ton of power in EBR and Jefferson, and a lot of influence at the state level (not power, but influence).

Wife (no pics) is a teacher, and the union in her district doesn't have much power at all, and I'm pretty sure she's not even a member of it.

Standardized tests are a great way to evaluate a student and a dumb way to evaluate a teacher or school, other than to evaluate the intelligence of the students at the school which has little to do with how well the teachers convey the latest standards, be they common core or anything else.

Most of the teachers I know are fine, good hearted people who really care and are really trying to make a difference. And they do make a difference, but they don't make dumb kids smart, and dumb kids can't do well on standardized tests.

they have little power in La, but they also have a lot of power in liberal states and especially in metro areas.

It wasn't anything outlandish before Cimmon Core either. Common Core isn't about raising standards or a better way to teach a given subject. Look at the countries that kick our students asses in math and science, nothing like Common Core in any of them, just rigorous methodology. Common Core is nothing but a way of setting the lowest common denominator in elementary educatin.

Common Core is simply,

By grade 5 in math you should know how to do A, B, C, D

By grade 7 in math you should know how to do L, M, N, V

Etc

That's all it is

The idea behind "higher standards" is that our kids need to know things at an earlier point, then they did before.

I agree with this.

It is remarkable the progress Orleans Parish has made with Charters and Vouchers.

When Katrina hit they were on the bottom along with St. Helena Parish in state ratings. Today 14 systems in the state, including Tangipahoa home of the Governor, are rated lower.

For and entire system to improve that much relative to other systems is a big deal. They only rate 71 systems. You will see individuals schools from time to time improve significantly but for the entire system to improve as much as it did was a HUGE accomplishment.

No doubt JBE will put a teacher union advocate in the position. (I do take some hope because JBE did sign the scholarship voucher tax credit program.)

Also, JBE only controls 3 out of 11 seats. Assuming the makeup of the 8 elected board members is similar to other state demographics, if the conservatives stick together, they should be able to repel anyone too liberal.

But I think it's clear the replacement will be more liberal than White, thus, my admonishment about being happy that White is leaving.
