Standardized tests are nothing but a political tool.

Standardized tests are supposed to protect against grade inflation and social promotions. It was never meant to be political. It became political when educational leaders decided to use it to grade schools and teachers, and said schools and school systems realized if they "teach to the test", they will get better results.

Thus, today schools are basically test prep companies.

Wanna know what the two parishes that you mentioned have in common?

Public sector unions should be illegal and public schools should be abolished. Our children are too important to continue this charade.

Can't wait to get rid of this testing shite, it's gone so far as we are now testing kids in 2nd grade. Bring back fricking recess for students, 10 minutes a day is bullshite.

2nd grade is too young... and recess needs to be much more. 7 hrs a day is probably not long enough, though.

Do the skills that make you a great car designer, also qualify you to be CEO of the car company?

Running a major government agency, and teaching kids math, are two completely different skill sets.

No, because it's pretty much failed to do that. Because...

They ARE NOT higher standards. Kids are learning less because they are not being held to higher standards and the academic rigor underpinning the whole thing simply doesn't exist.

Standardized tests are a great way to evaluate a student and a dumb way to evaluate a teacher or school, other than to evaluate the intelligence of the students at the school which has little to do with how well the teachers convey the latest standards

Teachers are rated on growth of students and the implicated impact of the teacher on that growth. Not the students raw score. So the lazy teachers that complain about students being different year to year are just ignorant. Kids are tested every year to compile data on their abilities for this reason.

It's anecdotal, but I've found the only people that have a strong negative opinion of common core are either ignorant, lazy, or both. Most have a problem with Eureka not knowing that that is a curriculum and not the same thing as CC. The others are teachers who were 40+ years old when CC was implemented. They taught worksheets from their desk for 20 years and don't like having to do actual work.

That teachers are happy that White is leaving tells me all I need to know as to whether this is good for the State's kids or not. It's funny that all the teachers claim that their union has no power, yet JBE bent over backwards to get the Union's support. All Democrats seek/need union support to get elected. You see it in every election, State & Federal, Why? There's your answer re John White being good or bad.

The only problem with Common Core is that we didn't do enough to force teachers to get on board with it, and to fully prepare themselves for it. That's lead to teachers who still don't understand it, using it. And it's lead to an over-reliance on crappy instructional tools and methods to take hold.

Yeah, I always thought teachers were a bit too quick to protest that Common Core stuff. This is at least the second time there's been a failed attempt to bring math education out of the 18th Century- "New Math" was the other. Either way, the underlying transition is 100% necessary, but good luck explaining that to some hick from SLU who freaks out if she can't tell kids to shut up and just flip the right-hand fraction on its head.
