J. Hooks wehen they were on 99.5 when it was classic rock. No idea what hes up to now... W&J were great as i grew up, didn't care for where the show went in mid 2000s but they were hard to top in their prime. RIP.. Time to say bye bye, billy ed.

It wasn't exactly "sudden" considering he hasn't been on the show for at least around a month.
I understand that, but the press release used those terms.

And he was notoriously jaded about cancer treatment after his son. He felt doctors focused on the bottom line ($$$) rather than outcome.
He may have delayed treatment for something because of that. Certainly, folks noticed an accommodation for his illness at least back to the April (or even March) timeframe where they were cutting out at 9 and sneaking a best of hour there.
It's not like they were lazy - they've been gutting up before 4 am for almost 40 years. John was doing double duty, driving from the show to run his radio station in Beaumont in the afternoons.
If there is a lesson out there is - 18-hour days, while perhaps lucrative, are probably not the best things for your health.
But, a great voice and a great wit. He will be missed.
RIP John Walton.

Damn, sad news. Listened to them as a little kid with my Dad on the way to school up until about 5 years ago when I left Houston. Very talented guys .... Walton RIP

I got tired of their schtick after high school, but I listened to them every day back then, and even some into adulthood before I just couldn't take the same formula every day. But for what they were, they were entertaining. And JW had a great voice for radio.
RIP.
And frick you, cancer.

I’ve been listening since The Old Storyteller was on the show. I always knew this day would come......
Long live the archives!!!!!! I wish I had every show on tape, as I’d start over from day one, and get another 30 years of entertainment!!!!!!!

"The dark one" had one of the all time best lines when they referenced Marc Morial at the Disney Hunchback of Notre Dame premiere in New Orleans. Walton asked Hooks if he went to the parade (which featured Morial riding up front with Mickey Mouse) and Hooks replied, "Yeah, I saw the big, dopey black rat in the front...and Mickey was next to him."
RIP, John.

RIP Walton... the early to mid-nineties wouldn't have been the same without you.

I was a dedicated listener back in the 90s and loved their skits, Friday Funny Songs day, etc.
I go back to the 80's, Mr. O, Mr. Kenneth, Billy Ed Hatfield and Abdul Camel Jockey. Also story teller and the a-hole song on Friday's among others.

No, the lesson is that in life, you do what you want to do until you die. That's just how Walton lived his life.

quote:Exactly. I expect a little ire when it's in response to people who hate our way of life and no longer beat around the bush about it.
I would counter that based on the derangement of the Left, based on the violence of Antifa/SJWs, and the push to socialism, and away from free speech... those old guys were ahead of their time to criticize what they observed the last 10-12 years.

Damn this sucks. Johnson and Kenny just isn't the same. I hope they keep the show going though.
