What type of work do you do? That entire area is pretty much a septic tank.

I would look at the NW part of Auburn. Great schools, and you can loop around to Smith Station. You are also close to Lake Martin for boating.

Definitely Auburn or Opelika. Opelika is even sort of pushing it depending on if you have kids or not.

Phenix City and/or Columbus shouldn't be considered at all. Both are shitholes with lots of crime. I used to work in Columbus and got stuck at work for nearly 3 hours o e day because a police Chase ended in our parking lot and the dude held off the police by holding his girlfriend hostage in his car

Not Opelika, there’s no reason. Stay in Auburn, schools are tops in the state as in top 5 across the board. Check the zoning and look hard, they have played with re zoning some stuff in the past I don’t know how that has worked out the past 10 years I haven’t payed attention.

The city of Auburn is a great town to raise a family, prototypical medium sized great southeastern town. Nothing around compares and there’s a good distance. Opelika if you knew it well and didnt have kids could be ok, but both of those don’t apply so I would steer well away.

I’d go:
Auburn

Smith’s station

Opelika

Phoenix City

Columbus

South and Eastern Columbus, GA is a shite-hole. Stay away.

FIFY

FTR North Columbus is fine. Most of the better offs in the area live in the North side of town or have moved farther north into Harris County.
Many have also moved into various areas outside of Phenix City headed towards Auburn/Opelika (Smiths Station and thereabouts).
Good school in the Smiths Station area is Glenwood HS and what ever elementary/middle school feeds into it from the area.

With family the Auburn area is the most preferred but that can get costly the closer you get to AU.

Grew up in Columbus, so take it FWIW.

Stay in Auburn, great school system and wonderful place to raise a family. A quick search on Zillow produced 75 results inside Auburn city limits between 300-350K
You will love the area once acclimated.

You'd would figure the place with have a FEW nice places with Synovus and Aflac HQ'd there.

My Brother worked at GMAC for 15+ years down there and I inherited/bought his house on Lake Harding...great lot and shoreline but probably tear down the cabin and build but I'm not sure exactly how much to spend. Its on the Bama side and technically in Beulah and not far from Valley (obviously a dump)

Did you just wake up from a 30 year coma?

You only get those things for 350k in places that absolutely suck

Right? I live in Austin and $350K isn’t getting you many options within city limits and the schools suck.

I’m in the same boat. I am getting transferred to Starkville. Please tell me it’s not as bad as I think it will be.

Looks like I could be transferring to the Auburn/Phenix City area this spring. The job will be in Smiths Station. I don’t know anything about the area, looks to be about a 20 min drive to work from Auburn and even shorter from the Columbus area.

Where is a good place for a family of four to purchase a home (300k-350k) in the area? Two kids under 3. What are the places to avoid? Any information will be helpful!

Buy in the Auburn city limits. No question. Stay away from Phenix City. Plus, PC is a long drive from Smiths Station.

ETA - Auburn city schools are top notch. Among the best, actually. The city has it's own system and has pumped tens of millions into making them great, especially the new high school. Opelika would probably be a distant second in the area. After that, you're mostly looking at average small town schools, all the way down to some real garbage.

Traffic is gonna get a lot busier on saturdays in the fall.

For what it’s worth, I’m moving from the Eufaula area to Fort Wayne, Indiana. Gonna be called for the next few years.
