Looks like I could be transferring to the Auburn/Phenix City area this spring. The job will be in Smiths Station. I don’t know anything about the area, looks to be about a 20 min drive to work from Auburn and even shorter from the Columbus area.

Where is a good place for a family of four to purchase a home (300k-350k) in the area? Two kids under 3. What are the places to avoid? Any information will be helpful!

Yeah, you want to be in Auburn or Opelika with kids. Auburn is more preferable.

I mean, I'd rather live in the smaller college town like Auburn vs. the bigger military town.

There are some nice parts, but the origin/history of the area kind of gives you what to expect.

Ft benning in GA(near columbus) Alabama side(phenix city) of everything was run by the mob to try and get all the army guys, booze, gambling, prostitutes, drugs, etc...

Id stay in the country or in Auburn.

Ok thanks! Any areas inside of Auburn to avoid? Or any good neighborhoods in the 300 range that you could recommend?

I'd try to live in Auburn. We have family that live in Auburn and they think its great - neither have any ties to Auburn University. Try to live inside the loop.

Grove Hill subdivision is a really nice older subdivision where you can get a lot of square footage for the money. There are several newer construction neighborhoods as well in that range. They also mentioned Greymoor as an option in that range.

Here is a good list of neighborhoods in Auburn:

Another thing to think about is that Columbus is in the Eastern Time Zone. I'm sure people do it, but it would be weird to leave work in one time zone and live in another.

From what I know, there's a good chance you'll be priced out of the Auburn market on a house large enough for a family of 5. I don't know the Auburn market all that well, but a friend had to settle on Opelika 4 or 5 years ago, and he has 3 kids and makes really good money. He said Auburn was more than he wanted to spend on a house large enough for them.

ETA: He was looking for newer construction though. It's possible an older home will be in your price range.

Really the areas to avoid you will know right away. Student areas and low income areas. both are small and pretty much isolated. Auburn is really the best bet for the area, unless you want to travel a bit more and live on the lakes. but as far as town, shopping, schools, etc... its Auburn
