What will it cost to make the move and what is the cost of living there?
Posted on 7/19/18 at 9:07 am to Jonathann3891
Are you a contractor now? Will you be w2 or 1099 with new company? $10-15/hr may not mean much more necessarily. Unless you've already taken this into consideration

Late to the party but i have been there for work numerous times. It’s a nice city to live in. North of the city are some great neighborhoods ( Carmel and zionsville)
School system is top notch. Life can get a little bland there but you are close to Louisville and Chicago for weekend trips. I’d live there for a good job. Nice city to raise a family for sure if that’s important.

Atlanta, although in fairness, the population of the City of Atlanta is only about 400,000. Maybe he has a point depending on the definition of city in whatever source he looked at.

If you are in oil and gas for any decent company then moving to 1099 for $10-15 more an hour isn't much of a pay increase, although Indianapolis would have a lower cost of living than Houston. But hell if you have a family $10/ hour more barely covers health insurance. Throw in a decent retirement package and other things, it's really not a large raise. Better certainly, but I wouldn't move for it as a 1099. You would be the absolute first person canned in a down turn most likely, so keep that in mind if you have any sort of seniority now.
Also, I'm not real familiar with 1099 for O&G but how does moving to a 1099 help with your future? I'm assuming years of experience is years of experience right?
But again throwing in the lack of benefits and extra taxes you will owe, moving from $100k to $120k 1099 is basically a lateral move.

Anybody ever been to Indianapolis? How is it?
I used to work often in Indianapolis and I would have to make a TON to move there.
Not that it's a bad place just the fact the weather is way to cold. The lakes stay frozen almost half the year and in that time people just do not go outside.
I remember one day I was there working and it was 17 degrees ! People were happy it "wasn't cold"

I would not move across the country for 20-30k, unless it was to a city that I prefer over where I currently live. Basically, I would have to want to live in that city and the extra money would have to just be another incentive.

My sister lives there, and it's boring as hell.

I go to a trade show in downtown Indianapolis every April, since 2013. I enjoy it immensely. It is a nice place, and has its moments too, but no one would confuse it with a more eclectic city. But really, its good enough for me.
The Rathskeller is one of the best German restaurants (and pubs) I have ever been to, and that includes time I spent in Germany and Austria.
Shapiro's Deli is seriously good. Order the stuffed cabbage.
Very cool cigar bar out in the northern burbs that I take clients to. I will dig up the name.
ETA: Blend Bar with Davidoff Cigars
(Clearwater Shoppes Shopping Center - not so impressive strip-mall, but do go, trust me)
You are in a great location for road trips to Cincy, Columbus, Chicago, St. Louis, Louisville, Nashville, Dayton, Detroit.
Thus, you can catch LSU football/baseball/etc. in Lexington (2-3h), Nashville (4-5h) and Knoxville (5-6h).
Also, the statistic I heard is that it is the largest city that is NOT on a navigable river.

It does indeed snow but be prepared for the blistering heat of a midwestern summer.
It gets hot there, but not as hot as La., however they do have some pretty high humidity much like S.E. La. does
A friend of mine, now dead, lived in Bloomington and his son lives in Indy and they both loved that part of the country.
My friend came down to stay after Katrina in Jan. 06 to grab some of the reconstruction work and stayed with the wife and I. He stayed from Jan. to almost August before he called it a day and headed back to Indiana.
The main difference he told me about the summer weather was at night it got into the mid to upper 60's in Bloomington, where it stayed in the upper 70's to low 80's here.

but it's by no means a bad city at all. It's basically just a large clean place to live. It's centrally located but not close to anything really. I'm sure you can get dirt cheap flights everywhere though.
Da faq? Indy is close to Louisville, Lexington, Cincinnati, Chicago, Nashville, St Louis, C Bus Detroit, Cleveland, etc.
Large international airport...big time Fortune 500 companies (ie, Lilly) and very clean city.
Winters suck but summers in Louisiana and Houston are bad.

I love that place. Concerts on the outdoor patio on a cool night drinking enormous hefeweizens is a little slice of heaven.

Company I work for has a terminal in Indy - one thing I can speak of is their roads. Not sure how but they're exceptionally terrible. They're the one state that can rival Louisiana because it seems like they haven't put any money towards maintenance of any streets, bridges, highways, or freeways in decades. Its amazing how they put up tolls on i80 and the first 40 miles from either side of the state feels like driving on gravel road.

Indy has cleaned themselves up. they used to have a shitty, crime infested downtown. But they invested and pushed a lot of shite outside the city.
Many cities should look at what they have done to clean their city up. I know KC did some of the things, but still has a huge crime problem.

It’s one of the least expensive US cities to live in. You’ll probably have a much higher quality of life with increased income and almost undoubtedly a lower cost of living

Those aren't close. Close is 30-45 mins. I'm saying there's no mountains, lake, beach, etc. I mean holy hell what is close to you? Someone that lives 2 hours away isn't freaking close, it not somewhere you run to for evening to grab a bite to eat.
Have you ever driven through Indianapolis? Once you are outside the city there isn't a damn thing. Farmland, then city, then farmland. That's it. That was my only point.
I clearly said it's centrally located so good for weekend trips.
