I left k12 on the admin side and had 20 days of vacation that were use/lose.

I had a month of leeway before the new job and wanted to leave the district on good terms since my kids still went there. I took half days every other day. My boss got that I wasn’t trying to screw then, but they were happy for me to be screwed out of those days.

That being said, I also worked up to 6:30 pm in my last day to make sure that they were good to go before I left.

I can appreciate that perspective. What I am leaning towards doing is staying full time through my kids' state test (8th grade Science), and then after May 9 using every day. I do want to keep 15 days in the disposal because I can buy .25 years on my PERS account. The rest I want to use.

if they say it's "use it or lose it" then you have two options IMO

Don't feel bad about taking time that you earned, especially if you offered to let the company buy it from you.

Ask them what a substitute teacher gets paid in a day. Then ask them to apply that substitute pay rate for the unused vacation days you’ve accumulated. Let them know that if you can’t get any value on the assets you’ve accumulated (your days off), then you intend to use them. Tell them the same rationale you told us that you worked hard to bank those vacay days and that you intend to get at least some value out of them. They are yours to use, so you don’t have to feel guilty about using them if you can’t get that value any other way.

Under this proposal, to the school, the cost of paying those vacation days out or hiring a sub are identical, so they won’t have an issue with it on a cost front. Same thing either way to them. And if we assume that you are a better teacher than a generic sub, then the school gets the benefit of the higher quality education for their students at the same price. Win-win

Literally made this proposal. $100/day. Shitty enough and they said no.

What kind of education are these kids getting, if they have a substitute half the time?

If he’s anything like the coaches that taught me in school, they might learn more from the substitute. Kudos to him if he’s better though.

They made the rules, if they are upset that you followed the rules then that sounds like a they problem.

Then feel free to use them. They are an asset you earned over time; you have every right to use them as you wish. Especially if reasonable alternatives are universally dismissed.

On the plus side, if this bureaucracy is too blind to see such an obvious win-win outcome, then it’s really not a place you want to be long term anyway. They are likely going to see a long, slow gradual downhill fall if they are consistently passing up this type of obvious improvement opportunity.

I would like to think teaching state tested classes and working on a PhD while maintaining a strong team every year...then being offered a collegiate coaching position and teaching in the Ed. Leadership graduate school would make it appear I do more than the basketball coach who teacher Driver's Ed or the coach who teaches World History and has their kids draw pictures of maps everyday.

Use them all! Since they don’t want to pay out that’s on them not you!

Hope you learned your lesson. Life’s too short…yes, be responsible to an extent but also maximize the time you have with friends family and loved ones now while you can

They won't work with you, you shouldn't work for them as long as you have leave. Know your worth.

$100/day is so shitty. Now I know why substitute teachers always sucked

It was $150/day when I came into this district in 2015. They cut it in 2017 because they said it was too much. Now, combined with the teacher shortage we have, we have a sub shortage, and they cannot figure out why that is.

I want folks to understand, I would come daily at just the sub rate of $100. The concept of valueless working is beyond unprofessional to me. That's all.

OP, they are already in the process of replacing you and will bad mouth you/not miss you when you’re gone. Take your days. There’s nothing they can do.

Im in the same position but going public to private. I have about 20 days in my bank and have been going play golf about once a week. If you dont use them, you lose them.

If you really want to use them, after the test date you mentioned, come down with covid. That's a good 5-10 days right there.

And it was all for nought. I don't understand people who put work above everything else.
