That’s because it is shitty. You earned that time off. Take every last one of those days. Some people in education think you should martyr yourself and it’s not worth it.

I went through very similar when I left education. HR went so far as to lie to me and tell me I had to work an additional day in January to keep my insurance. And they tried to squeeze as much work out of me as they could before I left. But I used every last one of my days knowing they would get paid out to me at a fraction of what I made.

and that's what you're doing, you've accrued those days, they belong to you

Take your days. Maybe find a surgery that you can schedule ASAP. You will probably burn a bridge in that district/school but there are plenty of openings going around. I would double check with the days moving over. I just moved jobs and they said they would not transfer but they did. A lot of those HR people are pretty ignorant.

for using accrued sick time I wouldn't think so, where I work it's expected that you retire with zero sick time remaining, that's quite a bit of money

I don't think this is true. Maybe it's different for teachers but I work in a corporate setting and they are legally required to pay me for any vacation days I've earned. Last 2 jobs I left did pay me for them.

Don't do that, you get leave for a reason. I hate when people come to work sick, no one wants you getting them sick.

that's typically true, not always the case with sick time though

Are these days all rolled into one (ie vacation and sick days treated the same)? If the answer is yes, then you are completely justified taking them if they aren't going to pay out for those days.

I know you hate to leave them in the lurch, but I don't think you are doing anything wrong or ethically fuzzy by taking some or all of those days if vacation and sick leave are considered under the same umbrella.

I mean, if you got sick, had surgery, had an accident requiring rehab and had to take all the days, then when you recovered you wouldn't have any left for vacation, correct? And they wouldn't give you extra, or if you went over you wouldn't get paid, so if I were the administrator in charge of you, I would realize its a headache for me to deal with, but that's the ground rules that that particular system is operating under.

Make every doctor/dentist/optometrist/dermatologist, appointment before you leave. Sandwich in a good ole colonoscopy, that'll eat up a 12 hrs at minimum for a day & a half off. Then take half days a few times a week.

Yes, all days roll into the same pot.

All true. I unsure exactly how FMLA works, but I would not have the days to get paid if I had a major surgery...especially early on in my career where the days were not accumulated.

If your district doesn't have any sort of payout structure for your accrued time after ten years then that is on them for being stupid, screw em.

Use the days you've earned, it's not your fault you were a loyal and hard worker for all those years.

A number of my friends and I left my old district at the end of last year and a couple of my friends were in a similar boat to you. One of them was a coach and wasn't able to use all of his days since he was in season, but the rest of them used all their days.

My district at least had a percentage payout for days after ten years though, we just all happened to be in the 8-9 year range.

Depends on what kind of example you want to set for your students. I would eat the days.

If you are retirement age the school system will pay you your daily pay for 25 days. Lump sum check. Then use the remaining sick days. You might have to get a doctor excuse for consecutive use of sick days used.

Only 35. I have eight years in the state so I would be vested and I can use 15 days of the accrued for buying another quarter year of retirement. The days over 15 are lost forever if I don't use. PERS system. Rather antiquated.

Use them as needed in the future.

Most of the time those days aren't paid out at the full rate so you're missing out on money doing this.

True. The thought was retiring a year early or something. There are perks our district provides after saving 30. Idk...I just grew up in a home where you sucked it up and went.

Document anything that seems like harassment. Would be fun to pressure the school district if your employers won’t allow you to utilize your benefits.

Sounds like dumb policy so just come to some reasonable solution with your principal.

Meet in the middle if you can.

I have been liberal in my use of sick days since and used twice in the past week.

My kids teacher did this in first grade and it sucked. The teacher knew she wasn’t coming back so she missed multiple days every week . It would’ve been better for everyone if she’d just quit and take the sick leave all at once so the class could move on with a new teacher. Granted, middle school PE might not be as big a deal.

Also don’t forget , if you have 11 years in. If college doesn’t work out you might be looking for your old job back or want to come back and get retirement down the road. So I wouldn’t burn any bridges . Not that anybody would blame you for taking your sick days, but try to work it out best for all parties.
