Job application leads Florida police to suspect in cold case

Todd Barket, a 51-year-old from Brandon, was arrested Wednesday and charged with first-degree murder in the death of Sondra Better. Better was killed at her workplace days before she was set to renew her wedding vows, according to local news outlets.
The 68-year-old had resigned from the job and only had a few days left there. She was stabbed and beaten to death, and police said DNA from the suspect was found at the scene.
"We had fingerprints, we had blood, we even had a possible description from a witness. But the person responsible for this heinous case seemed to just disappear," Acting Delray Beach Police Chief Javaro Sims said at a Wednesday news conference.
But then Barket applied for a job in December at a fire and water cleanup company that required applicants to undergo a background check and submit fingerprints. In January, those fingerprints were matched to evidence police had submitted in a national database at the time of the slaying. Barket also matched the witness' description.
Detectives and Florida Department of Law Enforcement agents then tracked him down and began monitoring him. Police later obtained Barket's DNA — it's unclear how — and it was matched on Tuesday with DNA from the crime scene.
The motive behind the slaying is unclear. Capt. John Crane-Baker says Barket had no contact with law enforcement since 1998 and his criminal history mainly consists of traffic citations. Police say he may have worked in a nursing home since the slaying.
It's unclear if Barket has a lawyer who can comment on his behalf. He was held Wednesday at the Hillsborough County jail and is set to be extradited to Palm Beach County.

Did he get the job?
After freshman year in college I took a job running a fireworks stand for the big company out of Memphis. They put me on the edge of a cotton field next to a swampy area outside small town in MS. 2nd day there 3 guys put in job apps for when I actually opened for sales in 2 days. That evening about sunset they came back, put a knife to my throat and took the $100 small cash intended for making change once the stand opened.
Needless to say, before sunrise the local constabulary had them in the hoosegow. One was headed back to prison as he had only been out a few months, the other 2 were gonna be sentenced to other facilities to keep them separated.

Can’t back out at that point when they tell you that you have to get finger printed considering they probably have all of your information. Would be pretty suspicious if a potential applicant refused or decided they didn’t want to apply anymore when told about the background check and finger prints.

He could have. At least his fingerprints would not be in the system to be flagged to the cops who are still looking at the case.

Maybe it's Suspicious but there's nothing to prove and likely no cops alerted if those fingerprints are not in the system.
This suspect should've vetted this job's requirements harder if he wanted to make sure his DNA stays out of the system and ultimately keep his freedom.

This suspect should've vetted this job's requirements harder if he wanted to make sure his DNA stays out of the system and ultimately keep his freedom.
He could just tell them he decided to take a different job.
Only a Florida Man would be dumb enough to submit fingerprints after literally getting away with murder.

He didn’t submit DNA, they collected it after they identified him through the fingerprints. Was just saying if the company got suspicious they could give the cops his name and info.

There are enough people who still don't like giving out personal info especially in his age range, that it would have blown over and not raised that many issues. I would have had them ask me why before I gave them my fingerprints
