Assuming a worst case scenario (he makes job A's cap for 3 years vs job B's minimum for 3 years before jumping up to the ceiling), it will cost him $58k over the next 3 years. Starting year 4, he'd make $46.5k/yr more at job B. Unless he's close to retirement, job B makes way more sense.

You're right, but time value of money and the fact that it would take him 4.5 years to break even while working an extra 520 hours a year is something to consider. A lot can happen in those years. That extra day off is pretty nice too.

If someone hired you for 45k and told you that you'd be making 115k in 3 years would you be skeptical?

Your career ambition (age) and marital status have a lot to do with the answer to this question. If you have a spouse that can make ~65k, then I'd go with job A, if you are single or have a spouse who isn't a high income earner, then you may need to take B.
It's really only about 20k more for job B, because you are working 10 more hours per week. I think I'd probably go with job A, but I have a wife who will make good money and I value time off.

I did not see three years as a timeline...
That said, I would imagine it's sales? If so, then as long as the company is reputable, that would totally make sense.

Depends. Is B the kind of job you will stay for the longer haul? Figure the cost difference in benefits, because that could be huge. Also 401k matching difference. Which field do you want to be in as a career? How fast is your expected advancement? A seems like a dead end, low ceiling job. Go with the better long term prospects in the field you want to be in most.
