If JPRD produces a better overall product, I think it could drastically change its retention rate of players leaving for outside playground sports. They have a monopoly on facilities and could easily provide a better platform for athletes. Unfortunately, they have chosen to stay status quo and many of their facilities and fields are neglected and not being utilized to their potential.
I think all non playground provided sports organizations took advantage that at the end of the day all recreational departments are government entities with government workers and capitalized by offering a perceived better product.

My daughter played softball at Oakdale and had the time of her life.
Driving by there nowadays, it's obvious the demographics have changed.

No different than the National Championships won by JPRD baseball. They are playing against a watered down competition model. But, I think they are realizing that. I believe they can improve the offerings and satisfy both the traditional recreational players as well as the competitive model- but it will take some time and lots of change.

LA needs to get in on lacrosse ASAP. Texas and FL are making gains. With all the NO private schools and eager parents, Boys and girls lacrosse is a juggernaut sitting on the sideline.

Going to all the state, regional, and national cheer competitions is expensive as hell.

My son played baseball at Lakeshore for 5 years. What a cluster frick that park is. They need a complete revamp of their system. We moved to Mandeville, and the system there is night and day to the crap JPRD has going.

I played for Cleary. Go Rebels. When we played Lemon, I'll never forget that when one kid left the field, he'd give his mouthguard to whoever was coming in.

Just like NOLA people put a huge emphasis on where they went to high school, where you played "park ball" is a big point of pride for a lot of adults.
This is how it should be. There is pride and rivalry with district ball, and this new push of one park for all teams eliminates that. Now it's just PE with captains picking teams. Kids today are missing out big time.

Those expenses apply to all sports. I want to know why those are more expensive to participate in.

How are "cheer" and "tumbling" (gymnastics) expensive sports? I can see maybe lacrosse having some equipment costs but what are the costs involved with cheer and gymnastics?
A youth cheer uniform (embroidered top, skirt, bloomers, shoes, 1 set of poms, bow) can cost $150 without even trying.
Leotards for gymnastics can cost $40 - $50, plus the cost of even the most basic non-spring mats (which of course the mats last years).
Can you do it cheaper? Sure! You can get leotards at walmart. For cheer, you can put them in a screen printed t-shirt and gym shorts. They can wear whatever shoes they have. Poms can be recycled.
But JPRD is talking about an academy model, so I am assuming they want to get into competative cheer and competative tumnbling, which means nicer uniforms and for tumble, nicer equipment such as spring floors.
To give you an idea about cheer, my daughter is both on her high school team as well as an outside competition team. The competition team is mainly the same kids as the high school team with a few exceptions. The competition team is through an outside gym.
We pay about 3K per year for school and 2K per year for competition - not counting travel or competition fees. In years where we can reuse the uniform, that cost gets cut in about half.

at Lakeshore
I've got a firm feeling Lakeshore will be making a comeback in the next few years. New leadership running the park, and an awful lot of young families making good money in Bucktown.
Bright also has potential, had a ton of kids playing there when I was at Lakeshore, but those numbers dwindled. Give them another 5 years and enrollment will be way up.
Lemon on the other hand is a tough one. That neighborhood is switching more and more to young professionals not having kids, and people who want a zip code that looks like a New Orleans zip without actually being in OP. Might serve all of the competition well to combine with Jefferson playground right down the road

Not as familiar with the playground layouts over there, wouldn't those kids just go down to Jefferson Playground? Is there another playground in between they would go to?
Would be awesome to see them all go to Pontiff, I bet that community would make sure Lemon stays open
Lemon and Jefferson are about a mile and a half apart, Lemon and Pontiff about 2 miles.
And yes... the best way to keep Lemon open is to send the kids to Pontiff!!

frick travel ball, they have killed playgrounds. Jaxxon isn’t going D1 after winning 46 weekend World Series..
is it travel ball or the fact that places like these playgrounds are stuck in the 60/70s when people want more and better? the whole needs to stay the same because thats how i did it and my dad did it mentatilty killed playgrounds.
dont get mad because people a better league to play in. frick local rec departments that put out a cluster frick product in the form of leagues while raking in millions in tax money. shite product played on shite fields put on by adults without a fricking clue.

how fricking sad is that

i will never understand the mentality of so many in the NOLA area. instead of having a source of pride about what you do for a living, where you graduated college from etc like the rest of the world......nope we have a sense of pride over where we played babe ruth and dizzy dean baseball

JPRD gets an insane amount of parish government funding. The parish spends about $9M a year just on the playgrounds. They have a tremendous amount of employee costs.
But the parish charges $4 per kid to play. They could probably raise that even to $25 per kid and use that money to improve programs.

Youth sports is increasingly becoming a pay for play model... where those with more money get access to better resources / leagues / fields / etc.
That's great if you are from a family that can afford it. There are some people out there who feel that affordability should not impact the ability to play quality sports.
Fact is this... if travel ball stayed in the 90s model where only the best of the best played AFTER the rec season... the quality of rec ball would be much better... becasue of better quality players and coaches.
And the reality is that the lower half of travel ball has become rec quality compeititon with better uniforms.
Travel ball is this generation's white flight. I'm not saying it's right or wrong but it is 100 percent accurate.
