I know a local to BR area deputy that had his unit broken into and a department machine gun stolen out of it. The Chief had to call ATF the next day and report. Took some balls for a guy to break into a marked unit at guys home.

I like Lapinto, but this was a dumb move, leaving your gun in your vehicle. Those guys always preach about leaving firearms in your car…

Sheriff must be offended knowing another man is now holding his piece.

After he passed, the deputies looked at each other and both shook their heads.
And people overwhelmingly support him in Jefferson Parish. I have never liked him, and hes not a real cop imo. Desk cop

His F250 was stolen if I remember correctly with guns in it.

Three years ago we had issues with people pulling on car door handles late at night, and sometimes smash in grabs.
I live in Metairie.
One early morning while walking my dog, I caught someone pulling on a neighbors car door.
I looked at her and asked "Do you belong here?"
She immediately got on her phone and said "Some white muthafukka lookin' at me."
A car starts down the street, pulls up to her, she gets in the car. The window rolls down and two dudes are staring at me.
They drove off.
I called the police, and they were basically
"What can we do?"
My neighbor knows Lopinto. He spoke with him about it, and Lopinto's response was basically

That would be a ridiculous law
It sure would be. Who in their right mind would then report their gun stolen if they didn't lock their car?

What would Harry Lee have done?

I’m assuming this was because the pers were already gone.
JPSO got pretty proactive with the car break ins in east Metairie. They sent a lot of extra patrols and even had unmarked units stationed around.
Funny story was one night two undercover were sitting in one of these cars and one of the little links came up and started pulling in the door handles. Needless to say, that guy and his buddy didn’t get away.

I saw the footage. Looks like the perp just opened the passenger door and took it. The truck was parked in the street and the video was taken from the house so you don’t actually see the perp enter the vehicle.
Personal firearm. Not department issued.

There are also license plate readers all over Metairie now.

Where does a sitting elected Sheriff go where he cannot carry?

Do as I say, not as I do…
Unfortunately, the perfect storm hit for one criminal last night. I had my personal concealed carry weapon, not my JPSO duty weapon with me yesterday and had conflicting commitments where I had to change into shorts and do manual labor. My firearm was in my vehicle when I arrived home and I failed to remember to bring it back in my house.
No excuses, I forgot.

I'll try that the next time I get pulled over for speeding.
At the least he had the balls to man up...

What would Harry Lee have done?
(His personnel would have done the same before it got to his level.)
You know, like real police work.
But then Harry Lee would not cry on TV over a pit bull being shot, because he was not shiny shoes police. He would have understood that he needed to protect the case and needed to display a steady character.
He may have had other issues, but he worked to keep his parish safe and they were safer.

That is how you handle that. Just own it.
Within reason of course.
