Do you think this is what is really driving this change?
A while back there was talk that some of the Bonnabel folks didn’t even want the parades going there anymore.
I kind of agreed on the smaller crappy parades skipping Bonnabel as there is no reason for them to be in a longer route

And then gorging at Panchos

For years, my family tradition as a kid was this:

Sunday parades, go to the early parade, then walk down to Panchos, eat, then walk back and catch the night parade.

Cuts off all of the bars on this end. They make a lot of money during parades, so I'm sure they'll be happy

Updated story - LINK

Typical JP Politics. We are going to make a change, but make it optional. So now, some krewes will parade going one way, and some will go the other way.

Which will confuse people and result in FEWER people attending the parades.

I don't think being the starting area will be any better for them. Seems like a bigger headache than it simply passing by.

Maybe they're trying to make Clearview mall a thing again

People usually have a spot where they like to watch parades and they know what time they have to be there. Those near the beginning and end of the route will have to adjust their times. The people near Clearview Mall will have to stay out a couple hours later than usual and I don't think they'll like that especially during night parades.

West Esplanade is the only way to get in and out around the parade. What a fricked up plan.

the parade will line up on West Esplande and Bonnabel
More specifically, where will it start. I've heard Nero is the officialy start.

However, i read this on Nola today.
quote:

Three krewes, however, seem inclined to stick with the current parade route. Argus, on Fat Tuesday, and Isis, on the last Saturday of Carnival, are not affected by the Family Gras location change. But Caesar on Feb. 23 would form behind Clearview Mall then roll diagonally through the Family Gras area and enter Veterans for the conventional parade route.

I was thinking just cut bonnabel. They had some bars in that area with cheap drinks during the parades. With Daquiris gone, and the parade not going past Bonnabel, I think that leave's Theo's Pizza as the only bar on the parade route and it's not really a bar, they just do beer deals.

so the routes will alternate, that may be confusing. I also see it's Caesar which used to be the best Metairie parade for length and float quality.

They very well may do that unless this Bonabell and W Esplanade route is 100% decided. This story shows 9 options, several of which remove Bonnabel altogether.

This is probably the only way to fix Metairie Mardi Gras.

I recommend taking Clearview and heading to Huey P direction (south) then hurrying up and getting over to the left, take the turn and the service road to one block past Cleary (Danny Park) take first two right turns to get on cleary, then first two right turns to get to other service road. It's like the Batcave going to the Dome or the Konami code.
It's quick and gets you anywhere on the south side, which is easier to leave than the north side.

the councilwoman is already pushing this one.

Her office I believe is who informed the civic associations.

forcing the teens out backfired. The Metairie teens where keeping the businesses open with their parent's debit cards.

I assumed as much based on what i've seen today as well. To be honest, this route helps me a little as i live between W. Esplanade and the lake but i didn't care about the walk further up bonnabel regardless.

I don't claim to know the reason for this and i suspect there is a mixture of historical location/attendance evidence along with some wealthy individuals having some say, but i don't recall a large amount of people east of Bonnabel on the route. Maybe that's because it took so long and ended there but the same will happen to clearview with the families trying not to keep kids out too late. I'm interested to see what happens and how it plays out but my gut tells me this won't be a standard in the coming years.

I'm sure i'm not thinking of everything here but since the floats are lining up there, they MAY keep the cross over at Melody open to jump on the west bound side of W. Esplanade to allow people to get to the Causeway overpass as well as cut through the neighborhood between W. Esplanade and the lake to get east of bonnabel and get toward Lakeview, etc that way. I agree though it will cause some issues for those north of I10.

a few months ago the owners bought the Sears site. So they now control the entire site. They apparently have hired people to design the "next generation" of the site. I think everyone realizes what they have isn't working, and the land is too valuable to waste like that.

I was at Semolina over the weekend, and we walked to Target after, and I noticed some of the signage now refers to "Clearview Center" Not Clearview Mall or Clearview Shopping Center.

It's still be the best and really only one worth a damn. I like that one because a few of our friends have house parties that night off of Bonnebel and it is the weekend before the real parades start in Nola.

Someone needs to step in and just force some of the Metairie parades to quit or combine.

I'm not sure if Metairie parades were ever great, but it seems like shortly after Katrina, everyone wanted to start riding in Nola parades. I guess Nix and the other big women's group starting as well as Iris growing.

And those damn marching groups of all kinds grew super fast too.
