Trig was super easy
I can't even really remember anything from Trig in HS. Only thing I remember now is that the Trig teacher was creepy as hell and always found a way to subtly touch the female students in class.

English 1 at 7:30 am first semester with a liberal hippy prof that looked like Jesus. He hated my guts when I told him one of my favorite authors was George Will.

They would have to grandfather the current students I'm sure

21 LSU credits in Science, English, and History, yet he will be taking Trig as his first math class at LSU.
Damn, that sucks for him. Basically means that if he goes into STEM he has very little chance of graduating early. He also might have to take bull classes his sophomore year just to get enough hours.
My honest suggestion is to get him a trig text book and have him take the LSU placement exam this summer. If you start from the beginning of math then you'll basically waste a semesters worth of classes taking basic math.
If he wants to do business or fine arts, then ignore my advice. It's better to take those classes for the GPA boost.

make just short of 100K a year in income, but still struggle. WTF?

What was so wrong with his statement? I would imagine having a combined income of less than 100K(like he said) and paying for private school for two children plus mortgage, bills, and everything else....could at times be challenging
Correct. that is before anything like med insurance, mortgage, car insurance for four vehicles. It's not like we struggle to put food in our mouths, but without TOPS I would have had to bury myself in debt to go. I guess to clarify a lot of what I'm saying is TOPS is the only "social program" that my family gets to reap the benefits of because we make "too much money", but I can assure you we aren't buying new cars every three years or taking 3 vacations a year

He's Pre-Med so I think Calc 1 is as high as he has to go. He goes to testing in July so we have discussed that as an option but I think he should bite the bullet and take the classes since he has zero calculus background.

I teach Advanced Math: Pre-Cal and the first three nine weeks are Trig concepts. I cover probably everything you could think of when it comes to Trig, from knowing everything possible about the Unit Circle, basic SOHCAHTOA, solving right triangles, Law of Sines and Cosines, Double Angle and Half Angle formulas, graphing all 6 trig functions and their inverses, and verifying identities, etc.
As far as the ACT, I order a copy of every one so I see what is in the math section and out of the 60 math questions, no more than 6-8 questions are trig based. Out of those 6-8, a couple are your basic SOHCAHTOA stuff then there might be a graphing trig problem and maybe one or two law of sines or law of cosines problems (they usually provide the law of sines or law of cosines formula).

I wouldn't doubt if they do finalize some plan, they let it run its course with every kid that has already started HS working towards the current tops. (Possible)

I wish I could turn the clock back 8 months and hire you to teach my son.

I think they will bow to pressure and maybe go up to a 22. I wish they would raise the GPA required to keep it a good bit though.

quote:True dat, I can sympathize with your plight as well because my son was having problems with Algebra in college and we were helpless. There were no College versions of Sylvan or Mathnasium. I was just meaning the school board was a waste of energy because bureaucracy moves so slow even if you had made a change it wouldn't have helped your son and that the rural school excuse doesn't jive because it doesn't get much ruraller than my high school.
I took Calculus at LSU from a dude named Sundar, got my C and got the frick out, don't think I would be the best teacher

What makes you think this is possible?? Just curious.

Has anyone heard/have knowledge of a timeline for this fiasco? I ask only because lots of people will be affected and would I'm sure like to have a clue of what fall semester will actually cost.
Posted on 4/13/16 at 2:37 pm to tiger91
This is only a proposition/bill. However, it seems to be having the desired affect. All the sheep are running again .
Posted on 4/13/16 at 2:37 pm to tiger91
Last I heard it would be signed into law or whatever during the summer session which means it would go into effect for the fall.
With a parking pass last fall it was $5024. So if LSU follows it's trending raise in tuition and fees it'll be about $5500 total this fall.

Just shooting from the hip and trying to use some common sense of what would seem fair. If a kid has already mapped out his curriculum and taking classes working towards a TOPS scholarship when he/she started, I'd think it would be fair for the state to keep those same standards for that class.
We all know common sense isn't all that common though.
Sorta like changing social security. You wouldn't kick the can 5 years down the road on someone that was planning on retiring and drawing SS in 6 months. (If that makes any sense.)

Why are we creating more of a burden on tax payers to give people who really don't need assistance paying for college free money?
We are subsidizing Texas and other states income base. 1/2 of LSU grads leave the state. So Louisiana pays to educate kids and other states steal them.

Son #1 made a 27 ... all 3 times. NEVER opened a book to study. Graduated with 4.0 from high school; graduates soon with his master's.
Son #2 made a 29 the last 2 times of the 6 that he's taken it (currently waiting on the 7th time results; trying for a 28 in math) and he never opened a book. 3.56 in high school; starts ULL in the fall.
Daughter, well, she's a freshman and will take it in June. Letting her just wing it to evaluate where she is.
Public or private high school?
