Maybe if they'd stop killing each other over there for a little while it wouldn't be such a liability to have workers in the area.

It is s dangerous area especially at night.

But they aren't stopping construction for that reason. They haven't even put the project out for bids.

This is because the people in that neighborhood have no pull and their sidewalk keeps getting de-prioritized.

This is a weird hill to die on.

They said they were going to expand Old Hammond Hwy for the last 15 years and it’s still a project in waiting. And you want to complain about a sidewalk?

What part of “state and federal funds to be used and a portion of parish funds” do you not understand?

The original green light plan was a temporary pot hole tax that was pay as you go and all it did was fix pot holes. When it was made permanent it was able to be bonded out to get the money and build the roads and pay for them over time-without waiting for cash in hand. And it was implemented with transparency and the roads were built as promised.

The new one plan is designed exactly as the first so the roads can be built and paid for over time.

Are you suggesting we wait until we have the money in hand? Did you build your house with cash or did you take out a mortgage?

The requirement of subsurface drainage has stumped them and added 3 years to the timetable. For about a mile and a half worth of sidewalks.

This is Louisiana Infrastructure in a nutshell.

There have been pedestrian-vehicle accidents near LSU on E Boyd that prompted the city/parish to add sidewalks there. Sidewalks and bike lanes were incorporated into the design of the Nicholson widening between LSU and Brightside for the same reason.

For Gardere....there are a lot of school age children along that route that walk in the ditch or on the side of the road. Gardere is also a cut through between Burbank and Nicholson for commuter and freight traffic.

There is a huge risk for an accident there. I can't believe this wasn't handled years ago.

I am sure you can believe it. It is Louisiana.

The money is in place, the project approved and you are satisfied that it takes at least four years to do a sidewalk project ?

How hard is it to draw up plans, have them approved, take bids from contractors and build a sidewalk?

This entire fiasco demonstrates how poorly our local govt. is run.

I don't disagree that the local govt is run poorly, but the whole purpose of the green light plan is to catch up on an entirely underfunded and years behind infrastructure in Baton Rouge. The money may be in place but like I said there is a lot of projects to deal with. the current list in the link below has 96 projects. Even in the private sector it takes time to get everything going for that many projects.

When you pass through that neighborhood on a school day and see all the children out there waiting on buses in the weeds, next to ditches and mud puddles you have to realize that our govt. can't provide them with a sidewalk even though the money is there,

You know what you should do instead of complaining on the OT, contact the Metro council seat, the state representative, the state senator, etc that "Represent" the gardere district and raise hell if you care so much. Those elected officials job is to fight and claw for these types of projects and monies to go to their districts.

They're normally further behind than this.

They have to research the title and acquire the servitude first. After that then yes it should be a quick bid out and build process

Did they vote to move the project forward and dedicate funding 15 years ago and not do anything?

Now where did I say anything like that?

And what does any of your BS have to do with the failure of our local govt. to build this sidewalk?

Original GL plan was pushed forward by Kip. It was not a pot hole tax. You are confusing that with something Pat Screen started way back when to rebuild roads.

Kip's plan was very successful for the most part and we received a report on a regular basis as to how it was going. However, it's not finished.

I think we need a full accounting of this plan and projects not completed need to be completed or the public that voted for the plan needs to know why not.

Before any other plan starts, I believe we need to know where we are right now before we start another plan with more taxes.

And I know why bonds are sold and taxes are passed to pay for the bonds. But I also know our parish is highly leveraged right now and we can't keep borrowing money and raising taxes every time someone has a pet project or BREC wants another library or the mayor wants an rapid transit line.

Then there's the question of whether or not the gang that can't push a sidewalk to completion can widen Airline Hwy. and handle a one Billion dollar plus program full of pork(enhancements).

Bringing light to a dark hole helps.

The administration knows about this, I'm trying to make sure voters do so that they think twice about giving these folks more money.

I'm not an attorney, but if it takes this long to do title research for a sidewalk, I don't know how they could build Burbank so fast.

Old Hammond Hwy expansion was part of the original green light plan.

I’m not sure I agree with your goal of this topic. All of the proposed projects in the new tax plan are desperately needed. This plan needs to be passed so construction can begin. We need to stop playing politics and get the work done. It’s either do it now or we will see a similar proposal from the next mayor.
