Three and a half years later, no work has been done.
They have the money.
How bad is this?
Think about that before you vote for more sales taxes for a massive road plan, massive synchronization plan and a bunch of so called "enhancements".

Project Greenlight was a 1/2 cent sales tax plan. It has brought numerous improvements to the city's surface streets.
I don't give a frick if the city refuses to build a sidewalk in the ghetto

There is a priority list, because there are so many locations in Baton Rouge that need attention, sidewalk on gardere is probably not high on the list. Everybody wants there issue fixed because it is most important to them, it takes time to get to everyone.

The folks that administered the GL plan are gone. We are still paying the tax, however.
The plan has not been completed yet, but the folks who can't get the sidewalk started as promised want to raise taxes even higher.
Do you trust these people to do what they say ?

When I used to travel over there you could see very distinct walking trails through fields and along ditches. You could tell exactly where everyone was coming and going. It was just something that stuck with me due to us living in a modern country.

Fred Raiford addressed this earlier. This is from a few months ago.
quote:
This is a great question," says Fred Raiford, the city-parish transportation and drainage director. "The city of Baton Rouge's and the state Department of Transportation and Development's federal dollars, and part of the city-parish's half-cent Green Light Plan funds, are set up to build sidewalks on the south side of Gardere Lane from Burbank Drive to Nicholson Drive. "Unfortunately, it has taken a long time to get through the engineering and review process that has to be completed when you deal with federal funds. The city-parish just received the cooperative endeavor agreement from the state and will go to council for approval by end of April. Once signed and forwarded back to the DOTD, then the bid for the work should follow. Once bids are received from DOTD and reviewed, they will forward them to us for the council to accept and approve the low bidder. "Construction should be underway by early fall."

Its amazing how people that dont pay hardly a dime in property tax get pissed when it takes longer to get things fixed than in neighborhoods that pay more.

The money is in place, the project approved and you are satisfied that it takes at least four years to do a sidewalk project ?
How hard is it to draw up plans, have them approved, take bids from contractors and build a sidewalk?
This entire fiasco demonstrates how poorly our local govt. is run.

When you pass through that neighborhood on a school day and see all the children out there waiting on buses in the weeds, next to ditches and mud puddles you have to realize that our govt. can't provide them with a sidewalk even though the money is there,

EBR shittyparish is currently doing the sidewalks on Eddie Robinson. I didn't see that "project" listed anywhere for financing....

Meanwhile another school year starts and no progress has been made.

Some would call not spending money in the sinkhole that Gardere is fiscally responsible.

The funding was approved January of 2015.

The approvals allow DPW to move forward with accepting federal money to build sidewalks in Gardere and a neighborhood in North Baton Rouge. The city will used surplus money from similar projects to fund its required amount, but the federal government will be footing most of the cost. Sidewalks will be added to the side of Gardere Lane, which currently has no designated walking path. People have been hit by cars, including a bicyclist who died. Early estimates put the project at about $1.2 million.

There are much more pressing matters for the parish...ya know, ones that matter to actual tax payers...

Exactly
And right now the mayor is pushing for more taxes to fund her Billion dollar plan.
How can we trust these folks to execute a Billion dollar plan when they can't get a million dollar sidewalk built?

Gardere's law-abiding residents are mostly working poor people. Our shitty public transportation is vital to them.
And THEY are vital to the community as many of them prepare food at the Sonics where we check knuckles, check out our groceries at Albertsons, bake cakes and cut meat at Walmart, etc..
Providing affordable and safe access to public transportation is a COMMUNITY responsibility. You don't have to be a commie bitchbaby democrat to understand that.

I'm a tax payer, and it matters to me.
It matters that the local govt. can not deliver as promised.
I'd bet the store owners on Gardere pay taxes as do the folks who walk to these stores. I'd bet the apartment owners pay taxes too. Also Traction pays taxes too.
Ironically BREC just finished upgrading their park on Gardere. It would be nice if they folks around there had a sidewalk to use.
