Metallica have postponed their upcoming tour of Australia and New Zealand so James Hetfield could return to rehab, the heavy metal legends announced Friday.

“As most of you probably know, our brother James has been struggling with addiction on and off for many years. He has now, unfortunately, had to re-enter a treatment program to work on his recovery again,” Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo said in a statement on the Metallica site.

“We fully intend to make our way to your part of the world as soon as health and schedule permit. We’ll let you know as soon as we can. Once again, we are devastated that we have inconvenienced so many of you, especially our most loyal fans who often travel great distances to experience our shows. We appreciate your understanding and support for James and, as always, thank you for being a part of our Metallica family

Lars should go to a-hole rehab and stay forever.

Hate to hear that.

Saw them in Birmingham earlier this year, and they still put on a hell of a show for a bunch of old guys.

Damn that sucks. At least he's taking the steps to get back on track.

If you always have guaranteed $ coming in you're not ever gonna get sober completely. Only thing that does it for most people is the prospect of having to live on the street if you dont get it together and thats not a risk for people like Hetfield.

It wasn’t just the Napster thing but the way acted with all that really showcased what an idiot a-hole he is. Also Jason Newstead’s stories of being constantly hazed by him.

The documentary on Napster where they show the whole Lars attack was hilarious. He looked like a dog chasing and car and the car stops.

Maybe the band shouldn’t sell alcohol

Yet somehow bands such as Phish, Widespread, Dave Matthews, & The Allman Brothers, seemed to thrive and profit heavily during the same period—all the while ENCOURAGING sharing of files and even having a special “tapers section” at their shows....they all took a page from the Grateful Dead’s playbook...they used the net and fan base as free publicity of their music.

They also started making their live shows available, in high res, the very next day for download, or within a week burned onto a beautiful 2/3 CD package mailed to your front door.

They also played at least 70 shows a year (over 100 some years) for a 10 year stretch. They didn’t sit back, cut a record, and wait for fans to purchase—that method was dying, and the jam bands had it figured out...Hetfield did not. Instead of figuring out how to adapt, he whined.

That's not really true. Metallica has sold millions of albums and is one of the top touring bands today. They were just greedy. Looking at things long term though they were right. Downloading, and now streaming, has killed physical media sales making it harder for new bands to make money.
