Disclaimer is that Tesla is doing very well. Everyone else isn’t.

No One In The U.S. Really Wants To Buy Electric Vehicles

EV’s from Toyota, Ford, Audi and Genesis are just sitting on dealer lots as supply outgrows demand.

LINK

The problem with EVs was once limited supply, but it has now become demand. In the U.S., EVs are sitting on dealer lots for far longer than their gas-powered counterparts and piling up as buyers mostly continue to overlook fully-electric cars, as Axios reports. Despite carmaker lineups filling out with new EV models and the production thereof ramping up, people are still worried about charging and the pricing of EVs.

The latest reports from Cox Automotive indicate that car buyers are much more interested in EVs now than in the past: 51 percent of buyers who participated in a recent Cox survey are considering buying a new or used EV, which is up from 38 percent in 2021. And Cox says that EV sales will break the 1 million mark for the first time in 2023, with sales reportedly accounting for about 6.5 percent of the entire auto market in the U.S. so far.

Even so, it looks like EV supply is outstripping demand by a significant margin. The nation’s fully-electric cache is reportedly up by 350 percent this year, with nationwide inventory sitting at over 92,000 vehicles. That translates to a 92-day supply of EVs, which is almost twice the current average for gas-burning cars.

quote:

The Ford Mustang Mach-E is at a 117-day supply, although Ford says it expects a surge in demand in the coming months. We’ll see. The Genesis Electrified G80 currently comes in with the longest day supply at 350 days. In fact, the South Korean carmaker has managed to sell only 18 of the sedans within the first half of 2023.

That’s insane. It would take Genesis almost a full year to burn through their current inventory if they stopped making EV’s today.

A big part of the problem is cost

Was looking the other day and the all electric version of a 5 series BMW is like 120k

The regular version is low 60s

ETW im wrong. The 120k was for some special electric version. The regular electric one is 80k

I'd buy one tomorrow if they were price competitive with ICV.

Should have made a coupe with a V8 or a turbo charged six cylinder.

A big part of the problem is that they are ugly as frick and there is not a fricking electrical charging station on every corner.

The whole thing is dumb as frick

Its only practical if you are rich and can have one electric car for commuting and another ICE car for longer distance stuff and the times when your power goes out.

You cant own an electric car as your only vehicle without it being very inconvenient sometimes

There is demand for Teslas, not EVs. Big difference.

Americans are smarter than everyone really thinks they are, except for about 81 million

I think the plug-in hybrids are going to be the way to go for a while. Mrs. H2O is in the market for a new car and we're looking at the Audi Q5e. 40 mile all electric range which is perfect for running around town, but still has the gas motor for longer road trips.

It's also fast with the electric and gas motors running together

Wouldn't matter if there was. Very few people are interested in stopping at the corner charging station for 20-30 minutes or longer.

Reliability is such a big problem with them though. They have all the disadvantages of both.

I say that practically but I’ll be replacing my GX460 with a hybrid GX550 when they’re available.

Sales numbers on the Y are consistent with this.

If I won the lottery a plaid S would be pretty cool.

I keep trying to push her towards the regular gas Q5 as we don't drive enough to warrant the price difference, but she's stuck on it.

I also refuse to own a German car out of warranty, so it'll be gone before I'm on the hook to fix it

Price is part of it, and no one here probably wants to hear it, but that small price difference is made up in the long run, saving on not having to deal with oil changes, gas, alot of routine maintenance you dont have to do with electric. I do agree if you have 2 cars, id keep one as gas until the infrastructure gets better

You have one at your house.

I think part of the problem is people think they will continue the pattern of having to stop somewhere every week for a full fill-up when the reality is more than 80% of EV charging happens at home because it's so convenient.

For the average EV driver, a 30 minute stop at a charging station happens about as often as a 30 minute stop at an oil change station for an ICE driver. Then the ICE driver spends more time at gas stations than the EV driver spends plugging in at home.

The truth is EVs are less environmentally friendly and less reliable than ICE vehicles. If people truly cared about the Earth’s environment, they would be demanding EVs be banned.

I think plug in hybrids, like EVs needs the right use case. I don’t drive around town much and my GX gets used exclusively for road trips and ranch driving. I want to be able to cruise around and stealth hunt pigs. My wife on the other hand only does around town driving and her model 3 is perfect. It’s never charged anywhere but our house. It’s all what you need really.

You ever run across an intermittent electrical issue on your gas powered car? Not fun, or worse a parasitic draw. Now multiply that fun by a thousand on an EV. Car still has brakes and suspension, plus all those additional electronics goin on inside the car and behind the dash. EV still has an A/C too. Besides oil changes and fuel I don't think it will amount to less maintenance.

Think there's a shortage of techs to fix gas-powered cars? The training on these things is WAAAYYYYY behind

That’s conservative.
