Poisons from Jacksonville, Florida’s “Brown’s Dump” seeped into the lifeblood of residents. The harm to their physical and mental health is tied today to another public health crisis: high rates of gun violence among children.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — In a Florida county with a startling rate of child firearm injuries, a boarded-up elementary school named for famed educator and civil rights activist Mary McLeod Bethune sits on a 250-acre site once called “Brown’s Dump.”

The dump emerged in an era of redlining, systematic racism that divided American cities large and small. From the late 1940s until the mid-1950s, the city operated a landfill here, heaping toxic ash from nearby municipal incinerators.

The Duval County School Board in the 1950s built a school there. On the surrounding land, developers built homes and apartment complexes.

Generations of Black children lived, learned, and played on the polluted land. It was first assessed as a potential Superfund site in 1985. In 1999, the federal government and state of Florida said the soil at Brown’s Dump “posed a potential public health hazard.”

The school closed in 2001. And eight years later, officials finally began the process of cleaning up lead, arsenic, and other contaminants.

Jacksonville has one of the highest lead poisoning rates in Florida. There is no known safe amount of lead for humans, and even small amounts can impair cognitive development, attention, and behavior in kids. Black children, other people of color, and those living in low-income households are at the greatest risk, studies show.

quote:

Emer’s research team studied more than 89,000 people in Milwaukee who were tested for lead exposure by age 6. Even after controlling for other factors such as race, sex, and neighborhood socioeconomics, they found that lead exposure increased the risk of becoming a perpetrator or victim of firearm violence.

Considering bullets are made of lead, isn’t this a “duh” statement?

We need bullets made out of vitamins. No more lead poisoning in ghettos.

I'm thinking they didn't do a good enough job with this aspect. I'd be curious the argument that higher lead exposure increases your risk of being a victim. Do the bullets seek you out more? .

As a white dude I've always had great comfort in knowing that I am immune to lead poisoning. It really is one of the greatest perks.

Maybe it is a matter of the lead bullets being attracted to the lead in the individual.

As a child growing up in the 50s, we carried those lead sinker pellets in our mouth while fishing to be ready to retie the line when breaking it. We lived in a home with lead based paint and was exposed to asbestos as well. When they built asphalt roads we would roll up little balls of asphalt and stick in between teeth and gums as a chaw. I was basically getting poisoned every day and not once thought of killing others with a gun, knife, big stick, brick, etc.

Interesting theory, but it doesn't explain the prevalence of violence in every other black community across the nation where they don't live in or near a toxic waste dump.

I guess the argument is that since you have high lead exposure, everyone around you does too. And high lead exposure leads to increased violent behavior in general. Which increases the probability that some of that violent behavior will be visited on you.

It's a lot of steps to get there, but I guess it's not entirely wrong.

Continue making excuses for them and increasing their feelings of victimhood and refused accountability.

Now do the lead filled makeup and lipstick women have been slathering their faces with for centuries and you might start to understand why they think killing kids either before or after birth is pretty trendy.

Kind of a flawed study if that is their conclusion. In that reasoning, an individual's increased exposure doesn't increase their risk of being a victim. Being around someone else's increased exposure does.

But an individual's increased exposure increases the odds they will be around someone else with increased exposure (and increases the odds they will be around a large group of people with increased exposure and for an increased amount of time).

From that standpoint it still flows through to increasing the chance of being a victim.

Any excuse/fallacy other than the actual reason.
