An Ivy League student with a heart condition died after drinking Panera Bread’s Charged Lemonade — which has more caffeine than three cans of Red Bull, according to a lawsuit filed by her grieving family.

Sarah Katz was a 21-year-old University of Pennsylvania student last year when she suffered cardiac arrest hours after purchasing the lemony beverage, according court documents filed in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas on Monday.

quote:

Katz, who had a heart condition called long QT syndrome type 1 — a heart-signaling disorder where heartbeats can be fast and chaotic — avoided energy drinks per her doctor’s recommendation, the wrongful death lawsuit, first obtained by NBC News, said.

Her college roommate, Victoria Rose Conroy, also told NBC that Katz “was very, very vigilant about what she needed to do to keep herself safe.”

“I guarantee if Sarah had known how much caffeine this was, she never would have touched it with a 10-foot pole,” Conroy told the outlet.

So one monster?

Half a reign?

Less than 3 diet cokes?

Oh... They are bad at math. Same as 7 redbulls. But Volumetrically double?

The use of hyperbole to make things sound way worse than they are.

It has more caffeine/oz than Red Bull or Monster but it also comes in bigger sizes.

Charged Tea 13 mg of caffeine/oz
Red Bull 9.25 mg of caffeine/oz
Red Bull 10.16 mg of caffeine/oz

A cup of coffee has 60-100mg of caffeine. Personal responsibility is a factor here.

Ms. Katz’s heart condition, Long QT Type 1 Syndrome, affects the electrical system that controls a person’s heartbeat, the complaint said. She was diagnosed with the condition when she was 5 years old, took daily medication and avoided energy drinks and other highly caffeinated beverages, the complaint said.

Ms. Katz was a junior the University of Pennsylvania studying a double major of international relations and health and societies. She was also an ambassador for the American Heart Association and taught CPR in high schools and underserved communities, according to the complaint.

As someone who has a medical condition (not as serious) that requires restricting caffeine, it’s pretty easy to find caffeine amounts in beverages. And if I can’t, I don’t drink it.

I would hope not, that would've been an incredible waste of time and extremely stupid to do.

Good grief, I had no idea a lemonade would have caffeine in it, especially that much. I can see where people with unknown borderline heart issues could be in for a sudden surprise. (Not that thats the case here).
