I was there last night, irregardless of the shooting. The crowds were horrible. And I'm not going back anytime soon. That game shouldn't even be played

No doubt last night is the worst crowds you will see on Bourbon. Tons of young gang bangers hanging out in groups looking for trouble

It's really bad. Pretty much have to stay inside and hustle from bar to bar now.
Canal was ALWAYS sketchy. I can't imagine now.
I don't pretend to know what the answer is, but I know NOLA is one major event from being as inviting as a Mexican border town. One death of a white woman during a robbery or a gunfight takes place and a tour group (all with the same t-shirts) gets caught in the middle.
It's a damned shame really. I love the FQ. I don't want to drive when I'm in NOLA. So I don't want to head uptown or Magazine. Unless NOLA is uber compliant? I dont know I've never uber'd in Nola.

Believe me, black folks don't want to go either. I was just reading the comments on a friend's social media (black guy) and it was unanimous.. All of his friends said they'd never go to that and think the game should just be canceled indefinitely.
Like you said, it isn't racism.. People, black or white, don't want to play Russian Roulette by simply being in the city.

I uber everywhere in New Orleans for my safety. You obviously can't bar hop via uber in the quarter, so I just make sure to always be in somewhere on the rare occasions I'm down there. Nothing good happens out on the streets,so don't loiter out there.

Trash dump thug city

So you are telling me that if you were staying at the Harrahs or Lowes hotel, you would feel unsafe walking around Fulton Street or anywhere back in the Warehouse District?
That whole area is extremely safe. They don't have the kind of bars and businesses that attract the thug homies

You can laugh all you want but it's true.

Canal Street is littered with shitty stores that are probably just drug fronts. Add in the fact that bourbon is street is a shite hole and its a recipe for events like this. The city needs to find a way to change that area.

I meant when I travel to the quarter from that area or anything like that. I used to walk back from the quarter if I stayed in cbd, but not anymore.

That is what is sad too. That used to be half of the fun. Of course that was a much younger me and 15-20 years ago. But wondering around the quarter (within specific areas) was always half the fun. Bars were just a place to pee and get a fresh beer.
Now I am older and all I see is riff raff. The resurgence of titty bars is another thing that amazes me and speaks volumes. Pre katrina I believe they were pushing to shut them all down. They were dirty and played out anyway. They always had their one block or so that you knew was theirs. You chuckled as you walked through and made a joke about going in. Maybe once every 10 or so trips you were drunk enough to go in for a beer and a laugh. Now they are all down the street?

I'm actually hearing the shooter was wearing a BLM t shirt. No joke

Probably trump supporters in no way affiliated with the bayou classic crowd

I stayed in the quarter last night at a hotel. shite was sketchy at times and I didn't go down bourbon. It's really amazing how it doesn't feel so sketchy during mardis Gras but for a fricking d2 football game you feel like you have to be on high alert and watch your back.

In fairness, all of the cities with a famous street have trash loitering outside. The people willing to spend money and who are of age are always inside the places rather than in the street.
I don't think the strip clubs are the real issue as far as crime. At least not the decent ones like Hustler, Barely Legal, Penthouse. Those places have more security than anywhere in the quarter, and you are paying a lot of money to be there.

It is not as safe as you think. It is also where many of the visitors stay for these events

Uber works fine in NOLA, I use it almost every time I go out. No one should ever be near Bournon St unless you are going to a strip club, then just get straight to where you are going and don't hang out in the street. Much better bar scenes uptown, on Frenchman, and in the warehouse district.
