Opening the BCS is horrible.

Opening Morganza is cataclysmic because as you said, it might well fail while opened.

Would be nice if we could actually get it fixed / replaced so it would be a viable option.

Every time morganza is opened it is less effective and it also adds problems to ORCS

I’m curious what happens when the States of Mississippi and Alabama decide to litigate this. Their fisheries and tourism were hammered last year when the spillway was opened. With the all the casinos shutdown, another bad algal bloom could crater the already fragile economy in the Biloxi area.

I didn’t think Alabama was affected.
And MS can go pound sand. The healthy navigation and other issues along the River are far more important

They run into a wall of federal law and a more powerful congressional delegation within the same party.

Mobile Bay is still almost entirely fresh from last year’s opening. Not good for the estuary.

Good Earth Science lesson for today.

I now understand the concepts of why additional flow in the Atchafalaya could be a wrong idea to solve the problem of having to open the Bonnet Carre Spillway.

Based on the model the goal with the River sounds like the flow needs to stay above a certain amount to prevent Shoaling from happening in the river bed south of the ORCS or Morganza. The more flow past these points the less shoaling that will occur. Any outlet from the river lessens its flow and allows the suspended sand to drop creating sand bars and further obstacles in the river.

Is there a site that shows the current depths of the river at strategic points? I know there are gauges the show the heights either above sea level or mean water level. What I am talking about from the deepest location to the surface, it would be almost like a 3d map of the river.

It won't affect tourism very much in Biloxi, since it's mostly casino based, but it wreaks havoc on the fisheries, same way it does in La.

Don't they have their own river that dumps fresh water into that bay?

Don't blame Louisiana for your Alabama River problems.

1) I live in La

2) The decreased salinity is a result of the lowered salinity along the MS sound.

I’m presently working on southern Illinois. I would hate to guess how many thousands of acres of farmland is presently underwater.

Its a last resort measure because there is a fear they may never get it to close again.

Which is believable being that the river at Vicksburg & Simmesport had it's highest recorded flow rate during the 2011 event at 2.3 million cfs.

No reason not to use both structures
This is an alarming trend though and I would hate to see what a cat 5 hurricane would do if these floods linger

But they should open both.

There is literally no reason to open the morganza right now. Not even close.
