A fatty would have known how to eat properly.

She likely was brain dead and on a ventilator for a few days

If it was a cornbread eating contest the college would be liable because everyone knows you take a risk of dying when you eat cornbread.

If she wins her case, shouldn't every other participant be entitled to part of the settlement? Based on the accusation, it doesn't really matter that they didn't die. The school approved a dangerous activity.

I know a guy who choked while eating a sandwich. He choked and strained for so long, he was taken to the ER by ambulance. They cleared his throat but he suffered brain damage from the loss of oxygen and straining. He is still recovering, months later, but has to undergo speech and occupational therapy. He was in a medically induced coma for a while. I was surprised because the guy was the epitome of health. Shows how fragile life can be.

How many people die from choking on food every year? Probably thousands.

Life is risky.

Everyone dies.

Sometimes, death comes unexpectedly from mundane activities.

Is it reasonable to think that we can (or even want to) remove all activities that contain a small amount of risk?

Does a person who chooses to participate in an eating contest not know that eating fast or eating too many pancakes can cause some problems: vomiting?; stomach ache?; spike in blood sugar?; or choking?

It’s a damn shame that this young woman died so young. The school should not be held responsible for the fact that generally innocuous activities have a minor increase in risk.

The girl just rolled snake eyes in the game of life. Sad.
