Giving people raises is absolutely not going to cause them to do a better job. That’s not how life works. It doesn’t automatically transform them into doing better at their job, and that’s in any field you look at, so if that’s the goal, it’s coming from a very ignorant place.
That is true, but if you need to fill a position with a competent person, would it not be easier to hire a competent person if the pay was good? Wouldn’t you get a larger pool of applicants you can filter through and select according to higher standards? Again, I’m not saying it’s the cure all solution, but I think it would help. Pay more for good teachers, fire the bad ones.

EBR loses quality teachers to Ascension and Central, paying more will certainly keep the quality and bring in others. Will also make teaching more attractive to potential employees who are still in school.

If there’s an actual incentive in place to reward doing a good job rather than getting more money because we think that’s going to solve the problem. If not, then you are simply going to get the base work you’ve been getting, because people are not going to go the extra mile when they are paid more regardless of the effort they put in to do a job.

Well, like I said, it wouldn’t be the only necessary change, it would just be a start. Zero tolerance for fights, as an example. You fight in a school, you go to jail. Period. I’m sure there’s a nuance to that, though. Find a way to get parents invested in their kids’ futures. That’s a tough one. You’ll take some on the chin, but it’s necessary. Vote out shitty SIs. Too many leaders make 6 figured and do nothing. Have a strong police presence in the communtiy. They need to enforce the law, but don’t plague the community. As in, don’t write tickets for a bunch of expired inspection stickers that just put poor people in more debt. Put violent offenders and drug dealers behind bars, and actually prosecute them. Police is another conversation, though.

Not even close and none of my family have ever been on welfare either.
You’re ugly aren’t you?
Is that how this works.

So for comparison a 1st year teacher makes only 2,200 less than a 10th year teacher.
Yikes, is it like that across the state?

Whew powerman really hit a nerve with you

You could hire the best teachers in the country and outside of the magnets in EBR it wouldn't make much difference. It's the students.
Posted on 6/30/23 at 7:15 am to Lickitty Split
Is it the teachers fault or the shitty parents fault? The poor academic performance is because parents allow it.

Every parish is different but yeah
Ascension is 48,783 for a first year, 54,448 for a 10th year. So it's better but still only 5,660 difference.
Livingston is 44,117 for 1st year, 47,661 for 10th year
St. Charles is 58,283 for 1st year, 66,372 for 10th year
Zachary is 50,022 for 1st year, 55,022 for 10th year

I just had a fire watch on my job with a masters degree. She taught at an upscale school in NOLA. She made more money sitting on a bucket reading novels in 4 months than she did the previous year teaching HS Eng Lit. I’m sorry, but that’s just a sad commentary on the state of our education system here in Louisiana.
Posted on 6/30/23 at 7:24 am to Falco
Damn, our system in Georgia pay $11,000 more by year ten without a masters.
Posted on 6/30/23 at 7:32 am to Lickitty Split
Im all for it.
OP, you act like public school teachers should never get another raise. You eventually want fast food workers making more than teachers?

Teacher pay raises that motivate the good teachers from surrounding parishes to move to EBR and skims good teachers from the private schools is a long term strategy for improvement. Better pay sometimes brings in better workers.

I’m reading this poorly written article in the local newspaper (toilet paper) where they want to give teachers and support staff in EBR an 8% or $6,000 raise. Like bro, the school system is shite, and I know some teachers. The only way I’d be down with this, is if they cut all the bs administrative fat and fired all these looney toon teachers. Even then, I still think you’re paying a lot of glorified babysitters too much money.
Lowest paid teachers, lowest ranked education system (or close to)
Get it?

How much more is the pay?
You’d have to dole out some serious coin to convince me (or just about any quality teacher) to leave an over-the-mountain school (nice suburbs) to teach in Birmingham city. 8% raise wouldn’t sniff the amount required.

A lot of big government conservatives in this thread that probably have teacher wives.

Government schools will never allow good teachers to thrive. They're shite and need to be totally abolished.

They work both sides of the street.
They say they need more money. Higher pay will attract better teaching candidates and Hypatia would help students.
But when challenged about test scores and poor results; they defend themselves by blaming the parents of the students.
So do we need better teachers? If do we just need pridon guards?
