Half the reason I don't want to have kids is the expectation that I'll need to socialize with other parents.

I don't mind socializing, but some of the people I see my sister deal with and the events she has to go to and teachers she deals with. Nah, I'm okay.

It takes a village to raise a child and only the village idiot would believe that.

Well that's a broad brush you're painting with. If I can't be there to discipline my kids, I want someone there to do it.

No. You would want someone to inform you of the situation and you could then discipline your kids yourself.

think the better argument lies with the economic model that the nuclear family resides in and not the nuclear family itself.

Think of the division of labor that is only capable with a nuclear family? It’s damn hard to be a successful single parent. Almost impossible.

It takes two decent parents to raise a child.

I belive it in the proverbial and anecdotal sense. I also think it has taken on a different meaning than what was originally intended. As with everything else, it has become a political dog whistle.

So your parents, aunts/uncles, siblings, friends, etc never helped you with anything regarding your kids?
That's a family, not a damn "village".

When people like Hillary say "it takes a village to raise a child." What they mean is, "it takes the government to tell you how to raise your child."

I thought most people had enough sense to know that.

Can I ask what consists of a village?

It’s a euphemism for government.

The saying was coined when the village consisted of your family or close friends
I don't think so. It referred to the community, not just family and friends.

Well, your village must have sucked growing up. Mine was good. The village I grew up in didn’t expect the educators to discipline me or teach me my values. The village I grew up in people looked out for each other and offered a helping hand whether it was asked for or not.

It depends completely on the source. If I said it, it means your friends and family.

If some politician or progressive says it, they mean government.

It’s a very old saying that was coined before we had nany states or socialism.

I've never believed that trope for one second of my life. And if you want proof just look at all the horror stories from the public school system.

I'm a teacher in a public school and (of course) I know a lot of teachers.

No teachers I know want to usurp parents' place in raising their children. Hell, all the teachers I know are very grateful for those parents who have actually raised their children before sending them off to school. Problem is, there are not enough parents doing that.

Hear you.
Goal is to be one of 2 parents, not a single parent.
Right in line with pernt that the economic model (ie, survival of fittest economic model is flimsy for too many nuclear families much less single parents).
