It seems like our factories were much more impressive 100 years ago

I don’t visit factories often so I could be wrong but it just seems like the huge impressive factories don’t really exist anymore, at least not here

It was all that smoke coming out of the stacks.

Computers and digitalization eliminates the need for a lot of physically moving parts.
Like a record player vs an MP3 player.

They could also just get stuff done with much less red tape.

We just 3D print everything out of Roswell now.

I work in what I guess you would call a factory/shop and we don't make parts on the grand scale of the pics you posted but we do some pretty cool stuff. Here's a quick example:

Technology has allowed us to scale down the size of machines to do those same jobs

I’ve seen better factories in the quad

Uhhh Boeing has the largest single building in the world for their factory and the new tesla Gigafactory is even bigger

Quite the presidential view on progress you have.

That’s like saying computers were more impressive 50 years ago because they were the size of a house

Well, we're not cranking out warships like we used to when those pictures were taken, either.

Bigger isn’t always better.

Yeah I get that. It just seems the nostalgic view of it makes it so grandiose and impressive. Looking back and seeing the pics I can’t help but get a sense of awe that these people 100+ years ago could do things so incredibly massive.

You ever see the Nissan plant in Alabama or one of the mega chemical plants along the gulf coast?

We literally have much bigger factories today.

I know the Exxon refinery and chemical plant in Baton Rouge has some massive furnaces, compressors, etc. I feel like and ant walking amongst it!

To be tied to a repetitive, often dangerous process, for 8
or 12 hours, oohh I yearn.
I can be easily replaced.
Unlike my grandfather I have no craft. I never see the finished work.
Sure great.
And now that work is completed by computers. No need for me.
