It is ridiculous how much plastic garbage is generated by our food

And that packaging will effectively never go away. A styrofoam bowl used for 30 seconds at lunch will remain on Earth for hundreds of thousands of years.

Food from the grocery store is full of plastic packaging that will exist for longer than recorded human history. The plastic spoon you used once as a small kid in a restaurant still exists and will still be here long after you and everyone you know are long gone.

I have started avoiding certain restaurants because of their plastic packaging.

Gas stations, Wal-Mart etc will bag anything. You can go in to buy a candy bar and they will put it in a giant plastic bag and throw in a long arse receipt.

It is ridiculous and something we will have to figure out if we plan on being here another thousand years or so.

Haven't quite taken it that far, but I certainly try to limit it. I don't use straws as I just don't need them. I try not to take that huge stack of napkins most people take. I go without a bag at the grocery store whenever possible.

I won't let it completely change everything I do, but I'll avoid wasting when I can. I'm happy that we get a recycling garbage can where we live as well. It's insane how much it limits taking out the real trash. We might have one bag a week of real trash. Everything else is in the recycling can.

It was also far from serious.

The waste spent on packaging in general, not just food, is pretty absurd.

When I was working in DC, the Capitol building and supporting Office cafeterias moved towards the biodegradable utensils, food containers, etc. shite didn’t last long.

I know some states are banning plastic straws, when I went to NYC in December many restaurants have paper straws and utensils.

It wouldn't be so bad if people were actually educated on what can and cant be recycled by the government. Or even better just use a trash can. We live with millions of selfish people on this planet who find it more convenient to throw their trash out the window than in a trash can.

When I was a kid it occurred to me that we could take garbage and compact it into bricks, adhere it or seal it and then use it as building materials. Of course I didn’t understand the cost/benefit ratio then.

Now I say we just dump it in volcanos to hopefully make some sort of Godzilla monster

Whole Foods was made fun of for this. If only oranges came with a protective cover.

If this so unnerves and discombobulates you-Never, EVER go to Japan. They wrap produce on the tree. They individually wrap every piece of candy in the box. You’d likely go mad.

Most businesses will not voluntarily switch to more sustainable packaging because it costs more. Then local laws are enacted to push things in the right direction and people freak out about government overreach.

We have a jackass here that's supposedly going to run for mayor because they're making him nix the styrofoam to-go boxes and cups for his shitty bbq and pre-frozen sides.

Until people decide that ditching single-use items for everything is worth the sacrifice in cost/convenience, not much will change.

Wish more people would take a stance on this issue like you. Would mean much shorter wait lines for me. Keep it up. It’s noble work you are doing for the rest of us.
