It said he flew back and went about his normal life for like 5 days.

How many did he infect?

ANYONE going in or out of Liberia should be actively tracked and monitored.

There's no telling how many people this guy has possibly infected since symptoms may not even develop until 3 weeks later.

Wouldn't even let them in the country. frick being tracked. Issue a no travel/admittance policy for West Africa.

Only thing that's come out of there is diamonds anyway. Maybe some oil and natural gas.

Well thank god they experimental treatments are 2/2 then.

It's not just that.

It's time of treatment.

Treatment of the people you are talking about began treatment very quickly after exposure. They started receiving it even before leaving Africa

The drug they gave them hasn't saved everyone even with Western treatment facilities.

Oh, and there isn't any more of it available now, so that kills the easily treatable angle as well.

There is some evidence that current HIV meds can help treat it though.

I wonder if the virus had mutated significantly. Lower mortality rate and longer incubation.

Ebola is a slow mutator, but what you described is a common evolutionary outcome of outbreaks.

Does this guy have kids or a spouse? I know it spreads by fluid transfers and close contact. What line of work is he in?

And people are acting like this is no big deal. That's unreal and scary.

Could be, but consider Nigeria got a new case and only 20 people got infected. And that's motherfrickin' Nigeria. I suspect the US would handle the outbreak better.

Could be. He may have stayed at home for those 5 days as well.

Think the article I read said he had contact with family members and a few members of the community. I don't think he was wandering around Texas licking people.

Yea I don't think there's any reason to freak out about Ebola. But what would be concerning is if we did start to have an outbreak that got a little bigger than people were ready for and we didn't have the resources ready. That's when you get in trouble. Hell, the flu puts a strain on hospitals during peak flu season. And yea I realize the flu is much more prevalent than Ebola here but still.

Ebola won't cause a breakdown of society like a pandemic flu.

But if you are serious about wanting to "start stocking up," the indicator to look for isn't a couple of more cases.

It's the tertiary cases of people who have had no direct contact with anyone who has been in abroad. When that happens that is the indicator that the government doesn't have containment of the outbreak.
