So if we do nothing here then these sleeper cells will be cool and play nice?

That’s fine but at what point we stop giving money and weapons and worry about our own stockpiles. What happens when we need our own. What happens if China decides to invade Taiwan? There is no way we can support 3 different war fronts. Including all the stuff we left in Afghanistan.

This is absolutely about revenge.

Now that is a load of feel good bullshite that is demonstrably nonsense. Israel is surrounded by about 500,000,000 people who believe it should be destroyed.

You think this chapter is the final chapter of this conflict?

There is no making sure this never happens again.

I couldn’t imagine the public reaction if after 9/11, our government just said “Yeah, I think the best way to respond is to keep existing and that’s about it.”

Which part of our 9/11 response do you think was successful? Honestly. Do you think the US is a better and safer country in 2023 for what we did after 9/11?

I also don’t trust or think Netanyahu is the man to lead the response. He has been in power for far too long, sowed discord in Israeli society with the proposed judicial reform, and his entire reason for being - uncompromising security for Israel - just got blown up.

Netanyahu leading Israel into an occupation of Gaza is a bad idea for many reasons. I hope it doesn’t happen.

Well…there is, but no one has the balls to do it.

I, for one, would be happy to see it happen. I’ve had enough of the “religion of peace”. I’d be relieved to know my kids and grandkids didn’t have to frick around with them.

ETA: frick them and anyone that coddles them.

I do worry this is the path we’re on. “China plays the long game” - we hear it all the time.

It’s a catch 22 though:

support our allies/geopolitical commitments & interests (erosion of Russian war making capacity) and potentially put ourselves in a much weaker position for major war

OR

Don’t support our Allies/geopolitical commitments & interests and China attacks anyway because we look weak, but we lost an opportunity to face it with a much weaker peer/partner and lost a critical regional ally surrounded by oil the west needs, controlled by nations that hate us all.

I don’t like the bigger picture path, but I don’t know there’s much better alternative either. At least the current path gives us intel, impetus to upgrade old stockpiles, expand & restart defense production, arm our allies like Poland to better defend themselves and to help us when called, etc.

Yes, but most can play nice or an acceptable level of nice.
Hamas cannot. It’s beholden to no one either. It’s really the worst case scenario for Israel.
Hezbollah is bad but is somewhat controlled by other nations that may hate Israel but don’t necessarily want to attack them for whatever reason.
frick even West Bank has been behaving.
Hamas is really an outlier, even in such a crazy fricked place.

One really should question what she means when she says "We" in her tweets.

Absolutely

At the end of the day the mission of the military and intelligence agencies is to protect the homeland. How many major attack on US soil have you experienced since 911?

Ned, you’re either trying to awkwardly work some kind of agenda angle, like concern troll or something, or you’re just really fricking stupid.

well, there has been some "workplace violence" incidents during the Obama era that suspiciously smelled like terrorism to me.

But, that's not to say your point still isn't valid... which it is.

Noting that 9/11 was not an ordinary terrorist attack [during peacetime] and that the vast majority terrorist attacks were in the forms of bombs (now known as IEDs) and assinations (now known as lone wolf) up until 9/11, the fact is we've come no where close to the attacks on the WTC in 1993 much less 2001.

that is an excellent point. I do not think you or I are being facetious. I know I'm not.

Not trolling and no agenda. I may well be incredibly stupid.

But Israel is not the US. It is not the biggest gorilla on the block. It cannot survive in isolation, and it cannot survive major blunders. As satisfying as it is to say hit back or kill them all, those aren’t real options for a tiny Jewish majority nation.

Hamas is awful. I hope Israel bombs the piss out of much of Gaza. But Hamas is not an actual threat to Israel’s existence. A nuclear Iran and war with surrounding nation states is an existential threat.

I truly fear israel running itself hot into Gaza may fuel one or both of those threats coming into existence.

On the multi-cam feed, lots of activity in the sky on Cam 1 the last five minutes...with some flashes near the ground.

And yet it has survived and thrived for 75 years.

A Saturday morning resulting in thousands of deaths is enough of a threat to be dealt with, don’t you think?

Peace equals eternal vigilance here, but many/most neighboring nations have come to the table and played nice.
Whether Hamas refusal to play nice is an independent movement or as pawns of Iran, they have to go regardless.
Every else can get sorted out.
